Fireballs Defeat Mongoose

Erin Dean goes up in the air to win the ball.
The U15 girls team continues to dominate their opponents this Fall as they came out and defeated the Mineola Mon-goose 4-0 last Sunday to remain undefeated with five straight wins. The win guaranteed the Fireballs of finishing at or above .500 in every season they have played travel soccer, quite impressive since this is their 11th season together.

Although the score was only 1-0 after the first 40 minutes, the Fireballs had numerous opportunities and continuous pressure on the Mongoose defense. The only goal of the first half came on a shot by Meaghan Walsh that went off the body of a defender and caromed into the goal. In the half, Victoria Aldrich, Erin Dean and Jackie Wisniewski all had chances that either were stopped by the keeper or shot just wide.

The second half started out much like the first as the Fireballs controlled the play. But the game didn't open up for them until they finally broke through with their second goal 15 minutes in - a terrific run by Daniella Sampram who powered past a defender and rifled a shot into the short side of the goal. Then it was Christina Cesarini finally getting a ball to dip under the cross bar - a bar which she had hit twice earlier in the match. And the final goal came with about 5 minutes left in the game from a corner kick that Christine Malhame bent directly into the goal off the far post.

The second half kept the Fireballs sideline entertained as there were several outstanding efforts - Kim Verderber putting 2 headers on goal in her short time up front, Michelle Rotondo making a run from her sweeper position the length of the field, Shannon McWilliams fighting through the midfield time and again and Amanda Murolo stepping in front of Mongoose player after Mongoose player. The game ended with the Fireballs second consecutive shut-out - a combined effort for Monique Roberge and Jackie Wisniewski.

Great job girls and keep up the great play on Sunday against the Valley Stream Liberty.
