At the October meeting of the Garden City School District Board of Education, the school board recognized Olivia A. Lucas, who has been selected as a Scholar Finalist in the 2007-2008 National Hispanic Recognition Program.

Students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as high school juniors and by identifying themselves as Hispanic.

This year, more than 196,000 students took the test and identified themselves as Hispanic. Of these, 4,000 have been recognized as National Hispanic Scholars or Honorable Mention Finalists based on the test scores and academic achievements.

The program is administered by the College Board, a not-for-profit membership association composed of more than 5,200 colleges, universities, and other educational organizations.
