Music Instruction Offered At Resurrection
by Janice Lamback

Want to establish a solid foundation in music? Look no further than the Music Institute at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. Founded in 2005 by Pastor Bill Harmon and Resurrection's Assistant Director of Music, Elisabeth Erb, it provides one-on-one private lessons in piano, organ, and guitar from talented adult musicians who are church members.

Piano lessons are given by Mrs. Elisabeth Erb; organ lessons by Mr. Ed Dettling Jr., Director of Music; and guitar lessons by Deacon Paul Pug-liese, guitarist for the Saturday evening worship service. These fine musicians are actively involved in Resurrection's worship and music ministries and have a great deal experience teaching private music lessons.

In offering private lessons to members of the church and beyond as an outreach service to the community, Resurrection's Music Institute imparts joy and a lifelong love of music to children and adults alike.

The positive effects of music as an outlet of expression for all ages have been scientifically documented. Learning to play an instrument helps in the development of large and small motor skills in young children and teaches discipline. It not only refines listening skills but instills a positive self image and confidence-no matter what age.

A recent study in a drug and alcohol abuse report stunningly revealed that secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (alcohol, tobacco, il-licit drugs). Another study showed second grade children who studied piano scored 27% higher on proportional math and fraction tests.

Simply stated, individuals of all ages and levels of music experience- from five to ninety-two-are enriched learning and developing musical skills in the supportive environment of Resurrection.

Each spring, the Music Insti-tute holds an annual spring recital to showcase the growing talents of its music pupils. What a rewarding experience for everyone participating and for those who attend! Lessons are 30 minutes once a week and cost $25 per lesson-after an initial fee of $30 for books, supplies and recital costs. If you are interested in lessons, or would like more information, please contact the church office at 516-746-4426.

Resurrection is a multi-site Christian community of faith. All are invited to worship at 5:30 PM on Saturdays and at 8:30 and 11 AM Sunday morn-ings, with Christian Education at 9:45 AM at the 420 Stewart Avenue location in Garden City. For more information, please visit www.resgc.org .
