The Garden City Flames spent a soccer filled Columbus Day weekend in Windsor, Connecticut. It was an extremely warm weekend, but the high temperatures brought more than just heat to the fields. The Flames took on the Hebron Lions, the Cromwell Chill, the Windsor Rage, the Granby Rovers and a team from Naugatuck, Ct. The competition was strong in games that were 8 v 8, a change from their regular season games. The offensive line of Brett Alvarez, Luciano Migliore, Nick Donner, Stephen D'Antonio and Patrick Slovensky put sustained pressure on the defense. Mid fielders, William Hammersley and Billy Trimmer tracked the ball well. Goalkeeper Chris Costigan with relief by Brett Alvarez made key saves numerous times throughout the competition. Harry Furey, Timmy Collins, Connor Tariche and Brian Goulard held the defensive line tight, giving everything they had to the game. The team missed the support of Greg Pahlavi who has been out due to injury. The Flames played tough and kept their games close, but the first two days ended in heart breaking defeats.

The final game on Monday tested the Flames resolve. Thanks go to Brian Goulard and Patrick Slovensky who after the first day of the tournament, went back to Garden City to play in a football game and then made the ride back up to Windsor to play in the Monday morning game. Now that is devotion! Timmy Collins scored an amazing goal off a corner kick, while Billy Trimmer showed what a powerful kick he has on a penalty shot that went just out of reach of the Granby goalie. Coach Tom Trimmer and Assistant Coaches Ray Tariche and John Hammersley brought this team together for a great tournament. The Flames went home happy as they won their last game against the Granby Rovers, 3-2. The effort put forth by all of the boys on this team was fantastic. The players, parents and fans would all agree that the weekend was filled with great soccer and lots of fun.
