Fire Prevention Day & Open House Success

Chief John P. Casey with Mayor Peter Bee, Village Trustees and area officials
Hundreds of Garden City residents attended the Garden City Fire Department's annual Fire Prevention Day and Open House on Sunday, October 14th. The fire department holds this event each year in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week. Some of the safety areas the fire department empha-sized through live demonstrations and handout reference literature were the importance of home fire safety, including holiday tree and lighting safety, kitchen safety and smoke detector use. In addition, the department conducted a live demonstration of it's vehicle extrication equipment. The residents were also privileged to see the dedication of the new aerial ladder truck number 144. Keeping with tradition of getting the village children involved, the fire department also held its annual fire safety poster contest, and hundreds of students submitted their own fire safety artwork which was on display during the event. According to Fire Chief John P. Casey, "I really enjoy this day because it satisfies a few goals such as stressing the importance of fire safety and education, introducing our residents to the fire department and, of course, having a nice day together with our residents." Chief Casey continued, "I also wanted to acknowledge the hard work of Assistant Chief Charles Cavarra, for planning and organizing the event for the last two years; he has done an outstanding job." The fire department also stressed that fire prevention and fire safety must be practiced each and every day of the year. Photos by Ryan Cain.
