Haunted House Supports Charities

Jared Szuba, an 11th grader at Chaminade HS and his brother Mike, an 8th grader at GC Middle School will host a Haunted House Fundraiser for Cancer Research on Saturday, October 27th from 5 to 9 p.m. at their home, 92 Meadow Street. (Raindate Sunday, October 28th.)

Walk through a haunted backyard, meet ghoulish creatures and monsters and donate to a good cause. The Haunted House will benefit the Miracle Foundation and the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

The boy host the event each October in honor of their dad, Dr. Martin Szuba, who died of pancreatic cancer in Oct. of 2002 after a brief but brave battle with this painful and terminal form of cancer. The boys, who were 8 and 11 yrs. old at the time, decided to have the first Haunted House just after their dad passed away because they wanted to help prevent other children from losing a young parent or other loved one as they did. They also wanted to remember how much fun he always had with them on Halloween.

The Szuba house was always one of the most fun ones to come "trick-or-treating" to and the boys and their dad liked to decorate it with scary things. They sometimes dressed up in monster costumes and scared some of the older trick-or-treaters, especially the high school football players who loved to come by for a hearty fright. At 6 ft. 6 inches tall, the usually reserved Dr. Szuba, made quite a formidable monster!

To honor Dr. Szuba's courageous battle with cancer, the family sets up the Haunted House in its backyard and garage and has live "monsters and ghouls" walking amongst the visitors to add a little fright to the chilling scenery. In lieu of an admission fee, voluntary donations are accepted in cash or checks made out to either or both foundations. Any donation is accepted and goes toward research to help fight insidious cancers such as pancreatic cancer.

Please come and support such an honorable cause and have tons of scary fun!
