Columbus Day weekend, the Destroyers U11 boys soccer team, arrived in Windsor, CT for a long awaited weekend of soccer. Despite the beautiful weather, great comaraderie between the boys, siblings and parents as well as all the hard work the boys put in, the scores of the games did not come out in the Destroyers favor.
However, there were some great moments in every game.
"Mighty" Matt Mullahey and Nick "the Mountain" de Moura were awesome in goal (and on the field)-there's no telling what would have happened without their amazing saves!
Darius "Defender" Iraj was happy to run down any attacking forward that strayed into Destroyer territory. The "twin" Brandons- Choi and Punturo played their brand of defense- smart, consistent and tough.
Off-the-field twins, Michael and Jack Brennan mixed with Matt "the Whirlwind" Jones to do offensive and defensive duty at halfback.
Destroyer forwards Nick Sarkis and Marc Oellrich displayed their formidable determination as well as the result of all their hard training- never tiring, running hard and showing their fancy footwork whenever the ball came their way. John Evangelista took a beautiful (and that means beautiful) shot on goal in game 2, but lady luck was looking after the home team as the shot rattled off the post. Conor Sproat's corner kicks were something to behold. In game 2, with the help of his teammates, Andrew "Hat Trick" Mohacsi scored an amazing three goals.

Finally, the Destroyers really showed what they are made of in game 4. This was the Destroyers toughest game. Oddly enough, they impressed coaches Mike Mullahey, Tony Sarkis and Tom Sproat more in the 6-1 loss to West Hartford than in any other game. Despite the feeling that this game had totally gotten out of hand, the team stayed motivated and every member of this team fought hard until the bitter end. The Destroyers tenacity was so pronounced that the coach from the opposing team came over to the boys and took the time to tell them how impressed he was with their efforts. Not to mention the fact the Destroyers were the first team to score on West Hartford all year thanks to teamwork and Chris Gormley's great footwork!

At the end of the weekend, the Destroyers returned to Garden City confident that as they rejoin teammate John "we missed you" Malandro and continue their efforts, they are becoming, as Coach Mullahey likes to say, "better every game".
The Destroyers play their next game at home vs the Wantagh Seaford Dominators, October 13 at 11:20 am. Stop by field 2A at St Pauls and cheer them on!
