Senator Hannon Urges Women To Get Mammograms Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City), Chair, Senate Health Committee, is informing Long Island women that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and they should get their mammogram. "The number of women getting mammograms is, unfortunately, on the decline, and it is vitally important that women speak to their physician about scheduling a mammogram," said Senator Hannon. Early detection of cancer is vital to the course of treatment, and the earlier one is diagnosed, the earlier doctors can begin treating a patient. Any-one who has questions about breast cancer or obtaining a mammogram can contact the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program at 1-800-877-8077. The Hotline can answer your questions and has information regarding emotional support for women, men and their families. It has been in existence for 27 years supporting those afflicted with breast cancer, and those seeking answers to questions. The Hotline also has information specific to breast cancer and various eth-nic groups. Senator Hannon added, "one should not conclude breast cancer is hereditary. Over 70% of breast cancer occurs in women who have no known risk factors." According to the Hotline, although you should discuss your medical history with your physician, it is recommended that women should go for a baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40.
