Gynecologic Cancers: An Update

Winthrop-University Hospital's Advances in Cancer Care educational series will present a free lecture, "Gynecologic Cancers: An Update," on Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at 7:00 PM. Held at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard at the corner of Second Street in Mineola, the program will address the latest information concerning the prevention, early detec-tion, and treatment of gynecologic cancers, emphasizing what you need to know about ovarian, uterine and cervical malignancies.

According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that there will be about 78,000 new cases diagnosed and approximately 28,000 deaths from gynecologic cancer in the United States during 2007.

Jeannine Villella, MD, Attending Gynecologic Oncologist at Winthrop-University Hospital, will provide an overview of gynecologic cancers, explaining what they are, their risk fac-tors and causes, how they can be prevented, and how they are treated.

Dr. Villella is involved with both clinical and research activities. Her main research interest includes the role of the immune response in ovarian cancer. "I am proud to be a gyneco-logic oncologist, and to be involved with research that has improved prevention, early detection and treatment of gynecologic cancers," she said.

A question and answer period will follow the lecture.

Parking and the entrance are at the rear of the building. Admission is free, but seating is limited and reservations are required. Call (516) 663-9370 to reserve your space or for additional information.
