World-Renowned Musicians and Artists at Adelphi University

Adelphi University is pleased to offer an array of free music concerts featuring world-renowned musicians and guest artists. All events are held in Adelphi University's Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, unless noted otherwise.

"Life with a Harpsichord"

Music by Aston, Frescobaldi, Couperin, Bach, Rameau, Scarlatti, Scott Joplin and Jose Bernardo.

Hailed as "a harpsichordist with few equals" by the New York Times, Adelphi's distinguished faculty member Elaine Comparone has performed throughout the United States.Since her acclaimed New York debut as a Concert Guild award winner, Ms. Comparone has had a diverse career as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, chamber musician, recording artist, and choreographer. She is the founder and director of Harpsichord Unlimited, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the history and music of the harpsichord.She is a recipient of solo recitalist and recording grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. She has performed solo recitals at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress, among others.In addition, she has appeared with the Adelphi Symphony Orchestra as part of the Prestige Concert Series with The Queen's Chamber Trio.

Susan Jolles and Linda Wetherill are recognized as two of the foremost musicians in the United States. Ms. Jolles's recordings have been featured on classical music stations throughout the United States and Europe, and her interpretations of works by Stravinsky, Berio, Ravel and other composers have earned her critical acclaim. Ms. Wetherill was the first American to be honored as a featured soloist at the World Peace Festival of Langollen, Wales. They will be joined by pianist, composer, and Chair of the Adelphi Music Department Christopher Lyndon-Gee. The program will include the American premiere of his new work for flute and harp, Over Litton, which debuted in August at the Presteigne Festival in Wales. Ms. Jolles will perform a second American premiere of Knocknarea by Adrian Williams. Ms. Wetherill and Mr. Lyndon-Gee will perform Prokofiev's Flute Sonata in D Major. All three artists will collaborate to offer music by George Rochberg, one of America's most important twentieth century composers.

Barbara Sprung Wilkes '59, Solo piano

Adelphi welcomes alumna Barbara Sprung Wilkes '59 back to her alma mater for a performance of Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, 50 years after she first performed the work at Adelphi. At age 12, Ms. Wilkes first appeared as a soloist with an orchestra and played Beethoven's First Piano Concerto. By age 14, she performed with the Queens Symphony Orchestra. At age 17, she performed in a program at Steinway Hall featuring Bach's Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue; Franck's Prelude, Chorale and Fugue; Chopin'sEtude in D Flat Major; and Schumann's Polonaise in A Flat Major and Concerto in A Minor. Throughout her career, she presented solo recitals and appeared as soloist with orchestra in a variety of venues in New York, California, and Florida. Ms. Wilkes, who resides in the Bay Area, has spent subsequent years sharing her musical skills and talents as music director and conductor of many opera productions performed in Marin County, California. The evening's program also includes Adelphi music faculty member Anneliese von Goerken, who will join the orchestra in a performance of the exquisite Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss. Ms. von Goerken has sung with the

Bronx Opera, Belleayre Music Festival, Tacoma Chamber Orchestra, Bremerton Symphony Orchestra, Evergreen Music Festival, The Washington-Idaho Symphony, and The Center for Contemporary Opera (New York City).
