Those trying to get a clear picture of the 2007 Garden City Trojans football team keep coming back to the same word - "athleticism." This team isn't big nor does it have a wealth of experience. But look around the offense, defense, special teams and reserves and you see a lot of good athletes.
That theme was evident last Sunday at Bellmore when the Trojans forced six turnovers on their way to a 28-7 victory over the Kennedy Cougars. It was the second straight win for GC and the second straight loss for the disappointing sixth-seeded Cougars.
Interceptions by Patrick Reeves, Francis McDonough, Robert Fargnoli and Mike Wood, a fumble recovery by McDonough and a perfect kickoff pooch kick by Connor Dwyer that was recovered by Kevin Rose turned a close first half into a rout.
After Will Manning's three yard TD run capped a 54 yard scoring drive to put the Trojans ahead 7-0 just before halftime, McDonough's two timely turnovers led to two more scores. He intercepted a pass on the Cougars' 33 and returned it to the 15. Quarterback Brendan Carroll then hit Robert Fargnoli with a pinpoint TD pass. On the ensuing series, McDonough recovered a fumble that set up Dan Savage's eight yard scoring blast up the middle.

Carroll made his big contributions not through the air but on the ground.
He carried 10 times for a net 108 yards, including an electrifying 75 yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Those numbers included two sacks which subtracted 28 yards.
Coach Tom Flatley singled our Robert Fargnoli as typifying in the "athleticism" of the team. Good speed and good hands led to his interception and touchdown reception. Many of the 2007 Trojans are multiple sport athletes, a strong argument against those who believe that young players should concentrate on one sport.
Garden City now faces the Mepham Pirates this Saturday at Homecoming.

Mepham is 2-0 with wins over Jericho (22-15) and Levittown Division (19-6). The Pirates feature Cory Jones, one of the best halfbacks in the Conference. Kickoff will be at 2pm following the annual parade through the village.
EXTRA POINTS: The four interceptions were one short of the school record set against Wantagh in 1999...Carroll's 75 yard touchdown run was the longest by a quarterback in GC history...Connor Dwyer booted four extra points and is now 7 for 7...It is interesting to note that the new spread offense hasn't produced many passing yards although Carroll has thrown two TD passes. The Trojans are running effectively, however. That isn't surprising to Freeport coach Russ Cellan who has been using the spread with success for almost a decade. "We probably run 70 percent of the time," he said. "In 2003 when our quarterback threw 30 touchdown passes, we only averaged about 12 passes a game"...For those who think Garden City has always been a running team, be aware that the Trojans have three quarterbacks among Nassau's all-time one season TD leaders: Matt Casey (20 in 1998), Mike Gluck (19 in 1991) and Matt Fischer (17 in 1993). Steve Carroll threw for 14 in 2004 and Dean Gibbons had 13 last year
