Garden City Schools Welcome New Teachers
"Our expectations are high," Superintendent Robert Feirsen, Ed.D., told the group, "and we will do everything possible to help you succeed." Board of Education Vice President Colleen E. Foley, PTA President Angela Heineman, SEPTA Vice President Marcia Kelly, and Assistant Superintendent Fino Celano also welcomed the teachers aboard. The orientation included a tour of the village with Garden City Village Historian John Ellis Kordes; training sessions in critical areas, such as the district's new computer system and student tracking software; and workshops on key district goals and programs.
Alison Blanc Art Primary Schools Alison Blanc holds a B.A. in art from Queens College. Ms. Blanc was a per diem substitute teacher in the Garden City Schools during the 2006-07 school year. She has New York State certification in visual arts K-12. Ms. Blanc is assigned to the primary schools, filling in for a teacher on leave. Victoria Cano Elementary Education Stratford School Victoria Cano holds a B.A. in elementary education and psychology from Hofstra University. Ms. Cano served as a leave replacement teacher at North Side Elementary School during the 2006-07 school year. She has New York State certification in childhood education 1-6. Ms. Cano is assigned to Stratford School, filling in for a teacher on leave.
Michael DeBlasio holds a B.A. in psychology and an M.S. in childhood/special education from Molloy College. Mr. DeBlasio student taught in the Jericho School District and served as a substitute teacher there during the 2006-07 school year. He has New York State certification in childhood education 1-6 and students with disabilities 1-6. Mr. DeBlasio is assigned to Stewart School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Nicholas Geluso Music Stewart/Stratford Schools Nicholas Geluso holds a B.A. in music from Queens College and an M.S. in music education from Hofstra University. Mr. Geluso was a substitute teacher at Oceanside UFSD from 2/07-6/07. He student taught at the Herricks UFSD in the fall of 2006. Mr. Geluso has New York State certification in music K-12. He is assigned to Stewart and Stratford Schools. This is a new full-time position, replacing a part-time teacher. Elizabeth Henn Elementary Education Stratford School Elizabeth Henn holds a B.A. in psychology/education from Marist College and an M.A. in special education from Kean University, Union, NJ. Ms. Henn was an elementary education teacher at Hillside Avenue School, Cranford, NJ from 9/04-6/07 and was a special education teacher at Walter O. Krumbiegel Middle School, Hillside, NJ from 9/00-6/04. She has New York State certification in elementary education N-6 and special education K-12. Ms. Henn is assigned to Stratford School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Jill-Lynnette Lynch Elementary Education Stratford School Jill-Lynnette Lynch holds a B.S. in elementary education from SUNY-Oneonta and an M.S. in literacy education from LIU, C.W. Post Campus. Ms. Lynch was an elementary education teacher at the Hauppauge UFSD from February 2005 through June 2007 and at the Huntington UFSD from 2002-2004. She has New York State certification in elementary education N-6 and in literacy (Birth-6). Ms. Lynch is assigned to Stratford School, replacing a teacher who resigned. Lisa Malaszczyk World Language Stratford/Stewart Schools Lisa Malaszczyk holds a B.A. in Italian/Spanish and an M.S. in secondary education from St. John's University. Ms. Malaszczyk was a world language teacher at Islip UFSD during the 1995-96 school year and a teacher of Italian and Spanish languages in the Bellmore-Merrick High School District from 1989 through 1995 where she received tenure. She has New York State certification in Spanish 7-12 and Italian 7-12 and New York State FLES certification. Ms. Malaszczyk is assigned to Stratford and Stewart Schools. This is a new position. Geralyn Markus Special Education Homestead/Hemlock Schools Geralyn Markus holds a B.A. in elementary education and psychology from Hofstra University and an M.S. in special education from Adelphi University. Ms. Markus has been a part-time special education teacher in Garden City Public Schools since September 25, 2006. From 1979 to 1985, Ms. Markus served as a special education teacher at Munsey Park School, Manhasset. Ms. Markus has New York State certification in special education K-12 and elementary education N-6. She is assigned to Homestead and Hemlock Schools. Kristy O'Connor Elementary Education Stewart School Kristy O'Connor holds a B.S. in elementary education from LIU, C.W. Post Campus and is pursuing a M.A. in literacy from C.W. Post. Ms. O'Connor was a regular substitute elementary education teacher at Hemlock School during the 2006-07 school year. She has New York State certification in elementary education N-6. Ms. O'Connor is assigned to Stewart School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Diane Page Elementary Education Stewart School Diane Page holds a B.A. in speech/language pathology and audiology from St. John's University and an M.S. in elementary education from Queens College. Ms. Page was an elementary education teacher at St. Raymond School, East Rockaway, from 1999 to 2007. She has New York State certification in elementary education N-6. Ms. Page is assigned to Stewart School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Jenna Piscopo Elementary Education Stratford School Jenna Piscopo holds a B.S. in elementary education and English literature from the University of Miami. Ms. Piscopo student taught at Kensington Park School, Miami, in the spring of 2007 and served as a substitute teacher at Homestead School in June 2007. Ms. Pollicino has been an elementary education teacher at Half Hollow Hills School District since September 2005. She has New York State certification in childhood education 1-6. Staci Sherman Social Worker Stratford/Stewart Schools Staci Sherman holds a B.A. in psychology from SUNY-Stony Brook and an M.S.W. in social work from Adelphi University. Ms. Sherman was a social worker at The Hagedorn Little Village School from January 1998 through June 2007. She has New York State certification as school social worker K-12. Ms. Sherman is assigned to Stratford and Stewart Schools. This is a new position. New Middle School Teachers John Camilleri Special Education Middle School John Camilleri holds a B.A. in history and education and an M.S. in general education and special education from Molloy College. Mr. Camilleri has been a regular substitute special education teacher at the Middle School since March 2007. He was a fifth grade teacher at C.S. 92, Bronx, from September 2006 through March 2007 and an elementary education teacher at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary School, Ozone Park, from September 2002 through June 2006. Mr. Camilleri has New York State certification in special education K-12 and elementary education N-6. He is assigned to the Middle School, replacing a teacher who retired. Ashley Dilworth Mathematics Middle School Ashley Dilworth holds a B.S. in childhood education from SUNY-New Paltz and an M.A. in mathematics, science, and technology from Hofstra University. Ms. Dilworth served as a teacher-aide at Garden City Middle School for the 2006-07 school year and was a substitute teacher there in the spring of 2006. Ms. Dilworth has New York State certification in childhood education 1-6 and in mathematics 7-9. She is assigned to the Middle School, replacing a teacher who retired. Melissa Errante English Middle School Melissa Errante holds a B.S. in adolescence education from LIU, C.W. Post Campus. Ms. Errante student taught at Grand Avenue Middle School and Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the spring of 2007. She has New York State certification in English 7-12. Ms. Errante is assigned to the Middle School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Carmine Filosa Reading Middle School Carmine Filosa holds a B.S. in elementary education and special education from St. John's University and an M.S. in reading education from LIU, C.W. Post Campus. Mr. Filosa was a special education teacher at Woodland Middle School from September 2000 through June 2007 where he was granted tenure. He has New York State certification in reading K-12, elementary education N-6, and special education K-12. Mr. Filosa is assigned to the Middle School, replacing a teacher who resigned. Lindsay Foster English Middle School Lindsay Foster holds a B.A. in English/secondary education/special education from Molloy College. Ms. Foster student taught at Syosset High School and Dodd Middle School in the spring of 2007. She has New York State certification in English language arts 7-12 and students with disabilities 7-12. Ms. Foster is assigned to the Middle School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Joy Giangrande Elementary Education Middle School Joy Giangrande holds a B.A. in business from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and an M.A. in teaching from Queens College. Ms. Giangrande served as a leave replacement elementary education teacher in the Roslyn School district for the 2006-07 school year and was an elementary education teacher at P.S. 76, Bronx, from 2004-2006. Ms. Giangrande has New York State certification in childhood education 1-6. She is assigned to the Middle School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Danielle Goodwin Speech Middle School Danielle Goodwin holds a B.S. in speech-language pathology from SUNY-Cortland and an M.A. in speech-language pathology from Hofstra University. Ms. Goodwin has been a speech-language pathologist in Glenwood Landing Elementary School, Glen Head, since September 2005. She has New York State certification in speech and hearing handicapped. Ms. Goodwin is assigned to the Middle School, replacing a teacher who resigned. Thomas Hayes Technology Middle School Thomas Hayes holds a B.S. in electrical engineering technology from the New York Institute of Technology and an M.S. in computer education from LIU, C.W. Post Campus. Mr. Hayes was a technology teacher at Renaissance Middle School I.S. 192 from October 2004 through June 2007 and at I.S. 59 in Springfield Gardens from October 2001 through October 2004 where he received tenure. He has New York State certification in technology education K-12 and School District Administration. Mr. Hayes is assigned to the Middle School, replacing a teacher who retired. Jodi Imperato Special Education Middle School Jodi Imperato holds a B.A. in marketing from New York University and an M.A. in elementary education and special education from LIU, C.W. Post Campus. Ms. Imperato was a regular substitute developmental skills teacher at Locust School during the 2006-07 school year. She has New York State certification in students with disabilities 1-6 and childhood education 1-6. Ms. Imperato is assigned to the Middle School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Toni Lichtenberger Special Education Middle School Toni Lichtenberger holds a B.A. in psychology from SUNY-Stony Brook and an M.A. in elementary education and special education from LIU, C.W. Post Campus. Ms. Lichtenberger has been a special education teacher in the Jericho School District since January 2006. She has New York State certification in students with disabilities 1-6, childhood education 1-6 and in students with disabilities 5-9. Tania Massimino Speech Stratford/Middle Schools Tania Massimino holds a B.A. in liberal arts and sciences and an M.S. in speech-language pathology from Hofstra University. Ms. Massimino had been a speech teacher at the Little Meadows Early Childhood Center, Fresh Meadows, since September 2005. She has New York State certification in speech and language disabilities K-12. Ms. Massimino is assigned to Stratford School and to the Middle School, replacing a teacher who resigned. Stacey Portmore-Davie English Middle School Stacey Portmore-Davies holds a B.A. in English and theatre from SUNY-Albany, an M.F.A. in theatre/directing from Brooklyn College, and an Advanced Certificate in English secondary education from Queens College. Ms. Portmore-Davies was an English teacher at Harborfields High School from September 2006 through June 2007, at J.W. Dodd Middle School from September 2005 through June 2006, and at South Side High School from May 2004 through June 2005. She has New York State certification in English 7-12. Ms. Portmore-Davies is assigned to the Middle School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Lori Rousku Art Middle School Lori Rousku holds a B.F.A. in art education from LIU, C.W. Post Campus and is currently enrolled in C.W. Post in the master's degree program in art. Ms. Rousku has been a part-time art teacher at Valley Stream UFSD #13 since September 2006. She has New York State certification in visual arts K-12. Ms. Rousku is assigned to the Middle School, replacing a teacher who retired. Thomas Skrivanek Physical Education/Health Middle School Thomas Skrivanek holds a B.S. in health and physical education from Lock Haven University. Mr. Skrivanek has served as a physical education teacher at Florence School District One, Florence, South Carolina, since November 2006. He has New York State certification in physical education K-12 and health education K-12. This is a new full-time position, replacing a part-time teacher. Tara Narutavicius Science Middle School Tara Narutavicius holds a B.S. in history from Allegheny College and an M.S. in secondary science education from Queens College. Ms. Narutavicius has been a science teacher at Oceanside High School since August 2005. She has New York State certification in earth science 7-12, biology 7-12, and general science 7-12. Ms. Narutavicius is assigned to the Middle School, replacing a teacher who resigned. Alison Wallace Social Studies Middle School Alison Wallace holds a B.A. in history from Marist College. Ms. Wallace was a leave replacement social studies teacher at the Copiague Middle School from December 2006 through June 2007. She has New York State certification in social studies 7-12. Ms. Wallace is assigned to the Middle School, replacing a teacher who resigned. Cari Zaharatos Special Education Middle School Cari Zaharatos holds a B.S. in elementary education and special education and an M.A. in advanced teaching from SUNY-Geneseo. Ms. Zaharatos was a consultant teacher at Ellis B. Hyde Elementary School, Dansville, New York, from August 2003 through June 2007 and a self-contained special education teacher there from September 2000 through June 2003 and was granted tenure. She has New York State certification in special education K-12 and elementary education N-6. Ms. Zaharatos is assigned to the Middle School. This is a new position. New High School Teachers Catherine Alvarez English High School Catherine Alvarez holds a B.A. in English from Queens College and an M.S. in childhood education from Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus. Ms. Alvarez was an English teacher at the Nassau Learning Center at Education Assistance Corporation, Port Washington, from October 2001 to June 2006 and a teaching assistant at Herricks Middle School from January 2007 to the present. She has New York State certification in English 7-12 and New York State certification in childhood education 1-6. Ms. Alvarez is assigned to the High School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Sandra Cardilicchia World Language High School Sandra Cardilicchia holds a B.A. in Italian/Spanish from Queens College and an M.A. in teaching English to speakers of other languages from L.I.U., C.W. Post Campus. Ms. Cardilicchia has been a teacher of Italian at East Meadow High School since September 2000 where she received tenure. She has New York State certification in Italian 7-12 and New York State certification in English as a Second Language. Ms. Cardilicchia is assigned to the High School, replacing a teacher who resigned. Timothy Casale School Counselor High School Timothy Casale holds a B.A. in psychology and English from Johns Hopkins University and an M.S. in counselor education from Hofstra University. Mr. Casale interned for his masters in counseling at John F. Kennedy High School, Bellmore, from July 2006 through December 2006. He has New York State certification as school counselor K-12. Mr. Casale is assigned to the High School, replacing a counselor who resigned. Jeanne Colwell Special Education High School Jeanne Colwell holds a B.S. in elementary education from SUNY-Oneonta and an M.S. in special education from Dowling College. Ms. Colwell was a special education teacher at I.S. 216, The School for Entrepreneurial Studies, Bronx, from 2005 to 2007 and Starting Early-Developmental Disabilities Institute, Ronkonkoma, from 1995 to 2000. She was a parent-trainer/team leader for home based ABA at Marion K. Salomon and Associates, Rothman Therapeutics, East Meadow, from 2000 to 2005. Ms. Colwell has New York State certification in special education K-12 and elementary education N-6. Ms. Colwell is assigned to the High School. This is a new position. Paul Cutter Physical Education High School Paul Cutter holds a B.S. in sport and exercise science from Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds, U.K. and an M.S. in physical education from Adelphi University. Mr. Cutter has been a physical education teacher at Merrick Avenue Middle School since September 2006. He was a substitute teacher at Roslyn Public Schools where he also student taught. He has New York State certification in physical education K-12. Mr. Cutter is assigned to the High School, replacing a teacher who retired. Kathleen Dubuke Science High School Kathleen Dubuke holds a B.S. in medical technology and an M.S. in secondary education from St. John's University. Ms. Dubuke was a science teacher at Mepham High School from August 2004 through June 2007. She has New York State certification in chemistry 7-12 and biology 7-12. Ms. Dubuke is assigned to the High School, replacing a teacher who retired. Nicholas Feulner English High School Nicholas Feulner holds a B.A. in English and philosophy from Gonzaga University and an M.A. in American Literature from the City College of New York. Mr. Feulner was an English teacher at Byram Hills High School from 2004-07 and at Herbert H. Lehman High School from 2001-04. He has New York State certification in English 7-12. Mr. Feulner is assigned to the High School. This is a new position. Megan Caputo Social Studies High School Megan Caputo holds a B.A. in history and secondary social studies from SUNY-Cortland and an M.S. in secondary social studies from Hofstra University. Ms. Krinsky has New York State certification in mathematics 7-12. She is assigned to the High School, replacing a teacher who retired. Adriana LoRusso-Vitale World Language High School Adriana LoRusso-Vitale holds a B.A. in Italian from Queens College. Ms. LoRusso-Vitale served as a substitute teacher in the North Shore School District where she student taught in the winter of 2007. She has New York State certification in Italian 7-12. Ms. LoRusso-Vitale is assigned to the High School. This is a new part-time position. Janis Mazza Special Education High School Janis Mazza holds a B.S. in special education and an M.S. in applied mathematics from L.I.U., C.W. Post College. Ms. Mazza was a secondary mathematics teacher in the Wyandanch UFSD from 2002 to the present and a special education teacher in the Syosset School District from 2001 to 2002. Ms. Mazza has New York State certification in special education K-12 and mathematics 7-12. Ms. Mazza is assigned to the High School, replacing two part-time positions. Mary Ann McGovern Special Education High School Mary Ann McGovern holds a B.A. in psychology from Marist College and an M.S. in special education from Hofstra University. Ms. McGovern has been a special education teacher at Lawrence High School from September 2006 to the present. She was a special education teacher at Bethpage High School from September 2003 through June 2006 and at Floral Park High School from September 2001 through June 2003. Ms. McGovern has New York State certification in special education K-12 and New York State certification in elementary education N-6. Ms. McGovern is assigned to the High School. This is a new position. Laura Romeika Physical Education High School Laura Romeika holds a B.S. in health, physical education and recreation from Seton Hall University and an M.A. in liberal studies from SUNY-Stony Brook. Ms. Romeika has been head of Health and Physical Education in the Broward County Public Schools since 2002. She was a physical education teacher in the Massapequa Public Schools from 1996-2001. Ms. Romeika has New York State certification in physical education and conditional initial New York State certification in health education. She is assigned to the High School, filling in for a teacher on leave. Peter Santoro Mathematics High School Peter Santoro holds a B.S. in accounting from the New York Institute of Technology and an M.S. in mathematics education from St. John's University. Mr. Santoro was a mathematics teacher at Martin Van Buren High School since 2005. He has New York State certification in mathematics 7-12. Mr. Santoro is assigned to the High School, replacing a teacher who retired. Danielle Warnke Psychologist High School/Private Schools Danielle Warnke holds a B.A. in psychology from St. Joseph's College and an M.S.E. in therapeutic intervention and a P.D. in school psychology from Fordham University. Ms. Warnke has been a regular substitute school psychologist in the high school and Hemlock School since February 2007. She has New York State certification as school psychologist K-12. Ms. Warnke is assigned to the High School and private schools, filling in for a faculty member on leave. Christopher Wuest Mathematics High School Christopher Wuest holds a B.S. in applied mathematics and biomedical engineering from the University of Rochester and an M.S. in mathematics education from Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester. Mr. Wuest served as a teacher assistant at the University of Rochester and student taught at Bay Trail Middle School and Penfield High School in Penfield, New York from December 2006 through March 2007. He has New York State certification in mathematics 7-12. Mr. Wuest is assigned to the High School, replacing a teacher who resigned.
