GC Flash Wins Again

On September 15, 2007, the U-10 Garden City Flash continued their fine play, beating the New Hyde Park Lady Lynx 4-1 at iPark. The Flash began the game strongly, moving the ball around the field well, stringing together multiple passes to take the ball from defense to offense. Unfortunately, the Flash's finishing was not equal to its passing, and multiple shots found their way wide or directly to the NHP goalie. Midway through the first half, right wing Julia McGuire broke a 0-0 tie by controlling a weak punt from the NHP keeper and alertly firing the ball into the empty net from distance. Once in the lead, the Flash continued their solid passing effort, with Defenders Kerry Defliese, Michaela Bruno and Emily O'Neill shutting down NHP counterattacks and distributing the ball upfield to the forwards. Chloe Stapleford and Katie Muldoon took advantage of these feeds to make surging runs up the wings before crossing or delivering their own shots on goal. Despite their efforts, however, the Flash could not grab another score and the half ended 1-0.

The Flash got off to a strong start in the second half with center forward Katherine Galzerano collecting a throw in from Emily and beating the NHP goalie with a solid shot at the far post. Shortly thereafter, Kerry fed Julia McGuire, who beat a slew of defenders outside the box before unleashing a long range effort from the right side into the top left hand corner for her second goal of the game.

The 3-0 margin did not demoralize the Lady Lynx, who launched a steady series of counterattacks. Determined defending from Grace Cameron, Nicole Derby and Isabel Klatt squelched most of these efforts, but NHP still managed to get off several shots that tested the Flash's second half keeper, Nicole Leto. Nicole responded in style, making three or four spectacular diving saves to preserve the Flash's lead. Although NHP was ultimately able to put one past her and the rest of the Flash defense, Katie Muldoon quickly restored the Flash's three-goal cushion, taking a Galzerano throw-in down the left wing and putting a good shot into the low right hand corner of the NHP goal.

The Flash will return to league action on September 29th at St. Paul's against the North Shore Strikers.
