Even though it's hurricane season, last Sunday it was the Garden City Xtreme who stormed into East Meadow to beat the Hurricanes. Down 2-0 in the second half, the match contained everything you'll see in an exciting youth soccer match - great skill, super goalkeeping, relentless defending and heart stopping counter attacks.
For the first 10 minutes of the match, it was all East Meadow. The Xtreme were under constant pressure, but held their composure and kept the match scoreless. Throughout the match the Hurricanes tested the Xtreme defense to the maximum. A goal by East Meadow 18 minutes into the game had them up 1-0. In the second half the Xtreme came out determined to get the equalizer, but a Hurricane player scored on an unstoppable shot to the upper left hand corner of the goal. As they did last week against Hicksville, the Xtreme came roaring back. Joanna Sokolovic and Lauren Miesemer came up big with goals in the second half. Outstanding keeper play by Sam Derby in the first half and Shannon Tierney in the second half kept the Xtreme in the match.
After sixty minutes, the match headed into a 20-minute overtime. Each team had chances to score, but nobody hit the back of the net. Deanna Di Pierro played 80 minutes at the center back. She single handedly stopped several potential goals by East Meadow with her incredible play. Isabel McKeown. Katie Roscoe, Cara Adams, Jenna Codignotto, Colette Seel and Kelsey Whitney fought relentlessly for every 50/50 ball and helpred their team stage an incredible comeback agaisnt a talented East Meadow team.
The heart-stopping action wasn't over yet. In the end, it was penalty kicks that decided the winner of the match. Lauren, Deanna, Alison Holfester, Alicia Mueller and Sam Miesemer were called upon to take the shots. Sam D. stood alone in her goal to stop the East Meadow shooters. Sam D. did awsome stopping 3 of the 4 shots she faced. In the end, it came down to Sam M. with the chance to win the match. Confident and poised, Sam M. blew it by the Hurricane keeper.
