Daredevils Defeat Hauppauge in Season Opener

The Daredevils area ready to have some fun this season - on and off the field!

After an impressive spring season finishing in the top tier of Division III, the GC U13 Daredevils moved up to Division II and are ready to face the competition. They are also thrilled to welcome the newest "devils," Charlotte Castranova and Jenna Pasquale, to the team, further strengthening their midfield squad.

The Daredevils warmed up at the Covanta tournament this summer and tested new plays and positions, placing third in the Platinum division overall. The rock solid defense, led by Kelsey Tierney in goal, contained the competition while Bitty Furman and Lauren Coleman each surprised their opponents with goals from the backfield. Throughout the tournament, the offense was also relentless in creating scoring opportunities. Erin Greiner launched her "secret weapon" corner kick to Carly Knowles, who nailed a goal with a midair flick. The tournament proved to the Daredevils that, with a few tweaks, they were ready to take on Division II.

On September 9th, they opened their season against Hauppauge. Charlotte Castranova set the tone for the game with an incredible rifle shot from the 18 yard line into the net, creating a 1-0 lead early in the game. Unable to penetrate the Daredevils' defensive line of Niki Berkery, Taylor Pappas, Lauren Coleman, Bitty Furman, Brynn Murphy, and goalie Kelsey Tierney, the Hauppauge team became frustrated and aggressive. Erin Greiner and Jenna Pasquale did an excellent job controlling the center of the field, and pushing the ball out to midfielders Lily Schmitt, Jackie Jahelka, and Courtney Studdert for offensive runs. Krista Dampman, Nicole Bommarito, Jane Frumberg and Liesl Jaye battled throughout the game for the advantage. The teams' efforts paid off with a well-placed cross by Courtney Studdert.... landing on the feet of Carly Knowles who finished the play, turning it into a 2-0 win.

The Daredevils face Stony Brook Lightning at 12:30pm at St. Pauls this Sunday. Come down and cheer the girls on! Go Daredevils!
