In Memoriam
Dean R. Stambaugh, 88, of Findlay, Ohio, died on Saturday, September 8, 2007 after a brief illness. His wife Dorothy and his children were at his side. Born near Blain, in Perry County, PA, on July 24, 1919, Dean graduated from Landisburg High School in 1937 and from the Pennsylvania State College in 1942 with a B.S. in dairy husbandry. He advanced to sergeant in the U.S. Army with the 389th Infantry Regiment of the 98th Iroquois Division in the Pacific Theater, from 1943-1946. After his honorable discharge, he began a long and successful career as an executive in the dairy industry. He spent nineteen years with the Breyer Ice Cream Co., climbing the ranks after beginning in the lab, through stints as production manager, operations manager and finally general manager of the company's Long Island City plant. He was then operations manager for the Cleveland division and vice president and general manager for Winconsin division of Hawthron-Mellody Farms Dairy; vice president of Reiter Dairy (Akron); and general manager of Sani-Pure Dairy (Findlay). During his career he was chairman of the 3-A Sanitary Standards Committee, and a member of the Production and Laboratory Council Advisory Board of the International Association of Ice Cream Manufacturers and the American Dairy Science Association. He had been an elected member of the board of directors of The Casino in Garden City; a little league coach and officer in the Garden City Athletic Association; and assistant scoutmaster of BSA Troop 80. After his retirement, Dean stayed active selling cars for the Herrin and Treadway dealerships in Findlay. He was an avid golfer who won championships, shot his age numerous times and recorded three aces. He had been a member of the First Lutheran Church in Findlay, the Findlay Country Club, the Masons and the Elks. He also was a member of Penn State Alumni Association and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at Penn State. In addition to his wife of 61 years, Dean is survived by sons Robert (Barbara) of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Alan (Karen) of Akron, and Richard of Findlay; grandchildren, Rhiannon, Corey, Emily and Bradley; great-granddaughters Rachel and Bailey; sisters, Jean Blosser and Fay Truxal, both of Carlisle, PA; several nieces and nephews, friends and golfing buddies. He was preceded in death by his parents, Newton and Rose Stambaugh of Perry County and Carlisle, PA; brothers, Lee of the Bronx, NY and Emmitt of Easton, PA; and sisters Ruth Neer and Helen Bailey, both of Carlisle.
