In Memoriam
Marie Mitten Cartnick, 91, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away September 9, 2007, at Somerset House at Oak Harbor in Vero Beach after a long illness. Marie was born and raised in Winthrop, Mass. She was an excellent student, valedictorian of her high school class and graduate of Radcliffe College with honors. She majored in the Classics while in college and met Edward Cartnick, who was attending Harvard. After graduation, she taught Latin at Winthrop High School until Edward finished his medical internship and then, in 1942, they were married. Marie and Edward moved to Long Island and raised their family in Garden City. They retired to Nassau Point on the North Fork of Long Island before moving to Vero Beach in 1991, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. Marie will long be remembered for the beautiful music she gave to us, the wonderful breads she baked for us, and her fierce love and appreciation for the game of bridge. Her joys in life were family, friends, and touring the world by land and sea with her favorite travel companion, Edward. Marie is survived by her husband, Edward Cartnick of Vero Beach, her son Cody Cartnick of Dover, New Hampshire, her two daughters, Christine Merritt of Darien, CT, and Lois Germano of Brightwaters, NY, her sister Martha Hosinski, her brother William Mitten, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, September 14 at 10:00 AM , at St. Helen Catholic Church in Vero Beach to celebrate the life of Marie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in her name to The American Cancer Society, 3375 20th St., Ste. 100, Vero Beach, FL 32960. Marie was a woman of boundless energy, a sharp wit, and a quiet competitive spirit. She made a deep and lasting impression on all who knew her. We will miss her. | |||||
