Golf And Tennis Classic Raises Over $160,000

Patty Scott and Stacy Comiskey
Since its inception, The Miracle Foundation's Golf and Tennis Classic has been the cornerstone of its fundraising efforts. This year's event, which was held on June 11th, did not disappoint. Over 350 people attended the all-day affair which included golf, tennis, silent auction and a first-ever Reverse Raffle, where the last man standing was the winner of the "Ultimate Golf Vacation" to Ireland. The fabulous getaway for four was complete with airfare, accommodations, and four rounds of golf at Ireland's finest courses courtesy of Aer Lingus and sponsored by The Stapleford Family. Bob Bonagura, of Rockville Centre, New York, was the lucky winner!

This year's highlight included the presentation of The Michael J. Tenaglia Leadership Award to internationally-renowned cancer researcher and Miracle Foundation research recipient, Bert Vogelstein, M.D. "Each year we ask our friends and supporters to embrace this worthwhile event and to support our mission," explains Joe Castronovo, Miracle Foundation President. "And each year the overwhelming support we receive is inspiring," he continued.

Over $160,000 was raised at The Miracle Foundation's Eighth Annual Michael J. Tenaglia Golf and Tennis Classic to fight cancer. Generous Corporate Sponsors included: UBS, Morgan Stanley, Korg USA, Astoria Federal Savings, Bank of New York Private Bank, Carney Security Systems, Citigroup Private Bank, D.F. King & Co., Dreyfus, Mercy Medical Center, Sovereign Bank and Wachovia, and Anne M. Kelly, M.D. Tennis Sponsors included: Coach Realtors of Garden City and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.

The money the Foundation raises is used to improve the lives of those diagnosed with cancer and to finding a cancer cure. The Miracle Foundation has granted over $2,000,000 to support the work of individuals and organizations who share their mission. Projects include financing breakthrough research by the nation's leading cancer researchers, including Dr. Bert Vogelstein, Director of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University Oncology Center. The Foundation provides funding for a Child Life Specialist at the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop University Hospital. In addition, the Foundation has provided tuition for children to attend Camp Adventure, a summer camp for cancer patients and their siblings. It is a Founding Sponsor of the Morgan Center, a LI non-profit pre-school that provides three and four-year-olds undergoing chemotherapy the opportunity to learn and socialize in a safe environment. The Foundation's new initiative is to support a unique, innovative initiative called "Back in the Game," a strength and fitness program geared towards helping former pediatric cancer patients regain their physical strength, which is often lost due to the effects of chemotherapy. The Miracle Foundation's projects have demonstrated phenomenal results. For example, the Foundation spearheaded the creation of the Miracle Foundation Pavilion at Mercy Medical Center - a 22,000 square foot, state-of-the-art cancer treatment center staffed by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. That facility, which opened last year, is capable of providing 30,000 outpatient treatment visits a year.
