Garden City Retired Men's Club Events Calendar The Garden City Retired Men's Club is a non-profit membership organization formed in April 1961 for the purpose of providing educational and recreational activities for the retired male senior citizens of the Garden City community. The organization is non-sectarian and non-political. All retired men 55 years or older residing in the Incorporated Village of Garden City in the State of New York are eligible for membership upon paying a $5 initiation fee. Every Monday is Open House, or call Joe Leto at 248-9022. The Club House facility is located at No. 6 Golf Club Lane (directly behind Lord & Taylor parking lot). The building is open every day of the week, except Friday, and offers two regulation size pool tables, television, card tables, board games, outdoor Bocce, horseshoes and shuffleboard. The Programs Committee is planning a very active speaker program. Come join us! garden city seniors in wwii video Five men of the Garden City Retired Men's Club have had their reminiscences of WWII videotaped and the video may be seen and downloaded on the Channel 13 web page: www.thirteen.org . Click on the link that says New York War Stories, then click on the Share Your Video link. At the bottom left, click on 5, which will open three lead-ins; one will be the blue GCRMC logo. Click play under the logo and the video will come up. Another copy of the video, on DVD, can be found at the Garden City Library. our volunteer driver list is growing!! We've added a few names to our volunteer driver list. But we still have a problem. If you are willing to pick up one or two of our housebound members, please let us know. We will try to coordinate the exchange of information. We will not publish the list. We will send your name and phone number to each housebound member. He will contact you directly. Please help. Our next trip is Monday, September 24 th and we are planning one every month thereafter. Keep in touch with Ed Palkot (437-0397) for the latest news regarding our schedule. Non-member residents of Garden City are invited. EXERCISE program Our Tuesday morning exercise program is getting closer. September 25 th is opening day. If you haven't been doing your daily 1-2-3-4's Joy will know it right away. The classes will run for 10 weeks into December. We will skip Election Day. Don't forget your 3 lb. weights. Non-member male Garden City residents are invited to join us. welcome to the officers club Our next planned trip for a luncheon at the USMM Academy is Wednesday, Sept. 19 th. The menu includes Virginia ham, sweet potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Members have decided to carpool rather than use bus transportation. You can arrange your own car pool, or meet at the Golf Club Lane Center at 8:30 a.m. (this is not a typo) if you are driving singly or without a carpool arrangement. We've added an orientation talk and a visit to the Academy Museum this trip. George Salem has arranged with Professor Gerhardt Muller to spend an hour or so in an orientation talk starting at 9:30 a.m., then a visit to the Academy Museum followed by lunch at 12:30. We expect to reserve 2 or 3 tables for lunch. For a reserved spot at one of our tables you must let Joe Leto 248-9022 know you are attending. The $15 lunch charge will still be paid at the door. Non-member residents of Garden City are welcome. second big birtHday bash is blooming We're waiting for the 80-year-old birthday celebrants to respond to our invitation to the Thursday, September 20 th second Cookout/Birthday Bash. George Cordes and Bruce Littlejohn are planning a pleasant afternoon of good food and fellowship. The $12 fee includes $2 for lucky bucks. Festivities start at 1 p.m. Members should mail their check, payable to 'The Garden City Retired Men's Club', to Dr. George Rivara, 14 Second Street, Garden City, NY 11530. Male non-member Garden City residents, who have reached or will reach their 80 th birthday anytime during the year 2007 and wish to participate, as a guest of The Retired Men's Club should contact Joe Leto at 248-9022. get on the ball -- the bocce ball that is The Bocce tournament kicked off right on schedule. The captain of each team should contact his opponent to set up a mutually agreeable date and time to play their match. speaker program in full swing George Salem has scheduled Dr. Larry Gottlieb to address our group on Monday, Sept. 17 th. Dr. Gottlieb, an internist, will speak on problems and cures of heart disease. Also George has scheduled Howard Weitzman, Nassau County comptroller, for Monday, October 29 th to speak on "Why our taxes are so high." November and December speakers will be announced as we make the necessary arrangements. Friday Afternoon Bowling Bowling started on Friday, Sept. 7 th. This is a fun setup. No teams yet . Just show up and bowl away. Here's a great chance to add to your exercise program and have some fun at the same time. Call Ron Zwicke at 747-6842 for further details.
