Socially Speaking
I thought it would never happen, but it did. So many people said how much they missed the Garden City Exchange and then our Garden City Historical Society announced that they plan to revitalize the idea and the shop in the Historic House has opened for business. Their hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10 to 4 and Saturdays from 10 to 1 with the entrance at the rear of the building. The shop opened yesterday and those with questions can call Kris Harder (747-1774) or Jill Mayer (747-8759). Their great thinking will provide a source of funds for the Society and a place that your no longer used treasures can find a new home. It's time to start your fall cleaning anyway. The folks at the Garden City Country Club lit up the sky on the day before Labor Day with their annual fireworks display and it was the end of a family day with games and water slides for the kids and enjoyment for the parents and grandparents too. The people who live near the club enjoyed the fireworks too. Many thanks, guys. Ruth Lacy would like to notify all members and guests of the Community Club that reservations for the Friendship Luncheon, to be held on September 25th at the Cherry Valley Club, will close on the 19th. Do get your checks in or call Ruth to see if they can still fit you in. My, how fast September has gone. The Garden City League of Helen Keller Services for the Blind held their Executive Board meeting this past week and they will have their first General Meeting on October 1st at the Garden City Library on the lower level. If you are interested, please join them. Details can be found in this paper before the meeting or by calling Membership Chairlady Aurora Vinciguarra at 358-7233. Helen Leahy, program chairlady, is busy planning a great program but she is also planning for the Fall Festival Dessert and Card Party on Thursday, October 11th from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Garden City Community Church. What hard workers these ladies are. Happy Birthday wishes go to Ray Finnerty, who will be blowing out the candles on his cake on the 16th of September. May you have a great day and many more years filled with nothing but good health and much happiness. As though this month hasn't been going fast enough, the gals who do the Jewelry Room at the Community Church's Election Day Fair are collecting your jewels to sell to those who don't have as much as you do. Now, that does not mean your diamonds, pearls, or emeralds - you may keep those, but they would like those pieces of costume jewelry that you seldom wear. Just drop them off at the church marked for the Fair and make Pat Dalton, Ellie Marshall, and Doris Forster happy that they can start to wort them out by category. Mary Gagliardo spent a lovely day with her two daughters strolling the Boardwalk at Jones Beach, enjoying the surf and the sand from that prospective. They had dinner together to end the perfect day. With the children back to school and adults back from vacation, Jones Beach can be a very restful place as we all know. In fact, it is nice for a walk in the Winter too, and you can always find a warm spot in the sun on the leeward side of those lovely Art Deco buildings. The Studio Department of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead will be starting their art classes and the instructors will be Arleen Rueth (Pastel Painting), Rose Pellicano (Botanical Painting and Watercolor Landscape), and Harriet Carotenuto (Oil Painting). The classes start from early October to mid October and if you are interested in traditional rug hooking call Janet Littlejohn at 746-1186 for information. They are an amazing group of teachers and the work their students turn out reflects that. That's all for now - see you next week.
