Winthrop Announces Honorees For Gala
"It is our privilege to acknowledge Mrs. Hooton's dedicated service to the hospital as a member of the Board of Directors and Dr. Greco's unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care and medical education," said Mr. Walsh. Theodora Winthrop Hooton is a longtime supporter of Winthrop-University Hospital and its programs and services. She has been a generous supporter of the hospital's Pastoral Care Department and its Chaplaincy Program, including in the planning and development of the new Serenity Chapel, which is currently under construction. Mrs. Hooton has offered tireless service to the hospital's Board of Directors for more than a decade, continuing a family legacy of community service begun by her father, the late Robert Winthrop, for whom the hospital is named.
Mrs. Hooton attended Radcliffe College and served as managing editor of Art/World, a monthly fine arts newspaper. Garden City resident Joseph Greco, MD, is chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Winthrop-University Hospital, as well as an active lecturer and mentor in the hospital's Continuing Medical Education program. He leads a team of approximately 40 anesthesiologists and 15 certified nurse anesthetists who are responsible for providing anesthesia services for all patients in Winthrop's inpatient surgical center and two ambulatory surgery centers, as well as for patients requiring anesthetics in Labor and Delivery, endoscopy, MRI/CT scans and special procedures. The department also encompasses the hospital's Pain Management Program, which has delivered immeasurable relief to countless patients suffering from chronic pain. Dr. Greco earned his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City in 1985. He completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in anesthesiology at Mount Sinai and served as Chief Resident for Anesthesiology. He joined the faculty at Winthrop-University Hospital in 1991 as Attending Anesthesiologist and was promoted to Vice-Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology in 1997 and Chairman in 2001. An active member of the Winthrop community, Dr. Greco serves on many hospital committees. He is a member of the Executive Resident Education Committee, Quality Improvement Advisory Committee, Executive Committee of the Medical Staff and Graduate Medical Education Committee, and serves as the chairman of both the Winthrop Resident Evaluation Committee and the hospital's Operating Room Committee, and co-chair of the Patient Safety Committee. Dr. Greco is active in clinical trials research as well as basic biomedical research and has published his findings in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is a member of the American Society of Anesthesia and a delegate with the New York Society of Anesthesiologists. Winthrop's annual Gala raises essential support for the hospital and its services, providing much needed funding for capital and other non-reimbursable projects. It is also an excellent opportunity for the hospital to recognize and honor the individuals whose hard work and dedication are so essential to its service to the community. The theme of the Winthrop 2007 Gala will be "Under the Big Top." The evening's festivities will feature a lively circus performance and, as always, fine dining, live music and various activities for patrons to enjoy.
