Group Holds District Meeting

Mr. and Mrs. William Cunnius; their granddaughter and member of the Sarah Townsend Society, Meghan Cunnius, New York State CAR President Schuyler Van Buren; and Ms. Isabelle Smith, former New York State American History chairperson and member of the Colonel Aaron Ogden chapter of NSDAR.
On August 4, the New York State chapter of the Children of the American Revolution held a district meeting at the Veterans Hospital in Northport. The theme of the 2007-2008 "Honoring Our American Heroes" project will benefit a National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor, NY.

The meeting location on Long Island was chosen to commemorate Sgt. Elijah Churchill, the first Purple Heart recipient, and the Battle of Fort Salonga. Among those in attendance were members of the Sarah Townsend Society, Children of the American Revolution (CAR) and Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

New York State CAR President Schuyler Van Buren met with veterans at the hospital, and local CAR and DAR members, to spearhead this project. Speeches, a sing-a-long and a visit to the Elijah Churchill restaurant filled the day.
