News From The Children's Room

The Children's Department has just concluded another successful summer reading club. Over 700 Garden City children registered for the program. The theme for grades K-5 was "Get a Clue at Your Library." Children in those grades read and critiqued 1,225 books and entered their reviews in a weekly raffle for prizes.

The theme for children ages 2 1/2 -5 (no kindergartners) was "Don't Miss the Bus, READ." Throughout the summer, the children's department held 56 programs, including book discussions, story times, craft programs, talent shows and family shows, with 1,155 children and family members attending. In addition to reading for prizes, participants also played the "Where in Garden City" game, where children had to identify historical sites in the Village, and the "Be a Detective" game, where they had to find book jackets of fictional detectives hidden around the children's room. There were also eight guessing games this summer.

The Children's Librarians want to extend congratulations to all of the children who participated in the talent shows. There was a total of 45 performers whose talents included singing, dancing, joke telling (including one comedian on a pogo stick), and story telling. They also want to thank parents and caregivers who made the summer so successful by bringing their children to the library this summer.

Registration for the Fall story times will begin on Saturday, September 8 at 9AM. Registration can be done in person or online at www.gardencitypl.org. Special needs children are welcome with adult.
