MISCHIEF AND MAYHEM: THE POLICE REPORT BUDDING CONSTRUCTION WORKERS? Garden City police received a call this week that four youths were seen operating heavy construction equipment at a fenced construction site at Garden City Middle School. When police arrived on the scene, the four fled the scene, but were caught after a foot chase. Three of those apprehended were underage, and were treated as juveniles, but the fourth, a 19 year-old West Hempstead man was charged with criminal trespass and endangering the welfare of a child (one youth was only 13 years old). The arrest was made by PO Wedra. Damage to the site was undetermined. The youths were allegedly driving a Ditch Witch... SHARING THE ROAD WITH US: On August 28th, PO Hudak saw a truck traveling on New Hyde Park Road that he had just taken out of service due to violations on the previous day. Only two of the original five violations had been resolved, police say. The truck was again taken out of service and received 35 tickets. It was allegedly found to be 40,000 pounds overweight as well... RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME : PO Matos, on routine traffic detail on Clinton Road, heard a radio report of an accident on Washington Avenue. He then observed a car pass him that had numerous parts hanging loose as well as undercarriage damage. PO Matos pulled over the driver, who was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated unlicensed operation, driving an unregistered, uninsured, uninspected car with the wrong license plates.... SEVERAL BURGLARIES or attempted burglaries were reported this week. On the evening of August 30th, burglars forced open the window of a Bayberrry Avenue home and stole jewelry, TV items and credit cards. An attempted burglary took place during the nighttime hours on August 31st on Nassau Boulevard. Again a window was partially pried open, but an alarm apparently scared off the would-be thieves. On September 3rd, burglars attempted to push in a rear door of a Commander Avenue home, but a chain held fast and an alarm sounded... LARCENY ARRESTS : Two shoplifting arrests were made at Lord and Taylor this week. On August 30th, a female 55 year-old Westbury woman was arrested for allegedly trying to steal designer handbags and a jacket. The following day, another alleged shoplifter barely missed felony charges when the total of her designer goods added up to $997 ($1000 is considered grand larceny.)... A BIKE was stolen from Community Park on August 31st and another bike was taken from a garage on First Street.... A NEW HYDE PARK man was charged with DWI after allegedly speeding and weaving on New Hyde Park Road on September 2nd... A 43 YEAR-OLD woman from Franklin Square allegedly stole 20 Oxycontin from CVS on September 3rd... A $500 BARBECUE grill was stolen from the back yard of a Kilburn Road home... 2 VASES were stolen from a building on 2nd Street... THE FIRE REPORT THE FIRE DEPT had a quiet week. On August 29th it responded to an unintentional alarm due to cooking on Seventh Street, and two malfunctioning alarms on Jefferson Street and Rockaway Avenue... ON AUGUST 30TH there were two alarms due to vehicles suspected to be leaking gasoline, one on Brook Street and one on Poplar Street. ODOR FROM A FIRE was detected at a Locust Street residence, but it was determined to be from an outdoor chiminea... ON AUGUST 31st the department responded to two malfunctioning alarms and one that had been set off by a curling iron in an Adelphi dormitory. Let's hope all the Fire Department's weeks are this slow!That's all for now. GT
