Shock Rocks At Covanta Tournament

The U- 10 girls known as the Garden City shock had a "high voltage" start against Rockville Centre as they took a 4-0 lead in the first half last Saturday. Tianna Biscone scored less than two minutes into the game as assisted by Jenna Camarata. Biscone's second goal was also assisted by Camarata. Brooke McDaid nearly scored on a powerful shot met with a great save. The Rockville Centre keeper rolled the ball out and Biscone intercepted leading to an unassisted goal for a first half hat trick. Julianna Kubler scored the fourth goal on a beautiful pass from Camarata for her third assist of the half.

Emma Costello, Julia Forbes and Jane Stone demonstrated both hustle and finesse with consistency. Caroline Peppard, Mcdaid and Olivia Decurtis were flawless defenders who werealways in position and made all the right touches. Kerri Metzler saved all shots on goal in the first half as did DeCurtis in the second half. Caroline Peppard added a fifth goal moments into an otherwise scoreless second halfas the shock short-circuited Rockville Centre with a huge5 0 shutout.

The second match against Massapequa opened with an offensive onslaught by the opponents and one miraculous save by Metzler. The momentum then changed when Decurtis sent a short pass to stone who found the back of the net for the first goal of the game. Metzler posted another first half shutout and kubler had some incredible saves not to mention monster punts as second half net keeper. Stone, Peppard and Decurtis were rock solid defenders. The scoreless second half defensive dual was shattered when Tianna Biscone moved the ball from the garden city net all the way uptown weaving in and out of a swarm of maroon Massapequens to score the first goal of the second half for a 2 0 lead.

Emma Costello and McDaid had a give-and-go-fest leading to numerous shots on goal and a few posts as well by Costello. It was a great 2 0 win over a very good team and the day ended with back to back shutouts! Each and every team member contributed to the day's success making Bill Metzler, Adriano Camarata and Brian Kubler three very proud coaches.

Day two began with an evenly match against powerhouse East Meadow. The first half stalemate was broken when Kerri Metzler centered the ball to Julia Forbes who put the first and only ball in the net. Huge defense efforts were made by Kubler and Peppard with big saves by Decurtis in the first half and Kubler in the second half for 1-0 shutout.

The toughest challenge came in the form of the Auburndale dragons who had toasted their previous opponents by scores of 5-0, 5-0 and 7-0. The Shock allowed their first goal against in the tournament after Kubler made a tremendous save but the ball took a bad hop on the rebound shot. A very well played game resulted in a narrow loss for the Shock.

The final game took place on Monday against South Merrick in what was a scoreless game until the very last minute of the game when Julia Forbes was the recipient of an assist from Decurtis for a 1-0 win.

It was a very respectable second place finish for this new team of nine year old girls who narrowly missed the gold by a single goal! Watch out Auburndale, the shock is going to zap you in the regular season! Go shock.
