Summer is coming to a close - at least officially - with the Labor Day weekend at hand and school starting next week. It may be time to lighten up a bit, what with all the rain that has been coming down, so I will start you off with this story. Torrential rainstorms had knocked down power lines all over the city, and the electric company was dispatching repairmen right and left. When one of the lineman called a long-time customer to ask her exact address, he was told, "I'm at Post Office Box 99."

The weary lineman replied, "Ma'am, I'll be coming to you in a truck, not in an envelope." Go ahead - chuckle, it will do you good.

The Auxiliary of the Garden City Community Church are sponsoring a Back to Church Barbecue on Saturday, September 8th from 7 to 10 p.m. at a local restaurant. Sounds like fun and a new and different idea. Good for them.

September is shaping up fast with many new and exciting things to do. Clark Botanic Garden is holding an Open House - Auxiliary Meeting on Sunday, September 16th at 1 p.m. at the Garden in Albertson and admission is free. There will be a lively discussion and refreshments so this is a good opportunity to see the gardens and learn more about them. Many of our ladies belong to the Auxiliary such as Jean Bliss, Mary Lou Piffer, Virginia Musante and many others.

The Ladies Auxiliary of our American Post #265 are busy preparing for their Sunday, September 23rd Luncheon/Card Party from 12:30 to 55 p.m. at the Senior Center. There will be a hot buffet with wine, beer, soda, and dessert. Checks in the amount of $20 per person and made payable to W.B.T. Post 265 should be mailed to Ms. Rose Forgione at 100 Tanners Pond Road, Garden City, N.Y. 11530. Rose is not only taking the reservations. but she is Chairing the event. Joan Nedelka, President of the Auxiliary is always there with a helping hand and that is what makes a successful event. Good luck ladies - I know it all goes to our Veterans.

The Long Island Fair will be held early this year from Wednesday, September 26th through Sunday, September 30th. The hours are 9:45 to 6:15 p.m. Friday through Sunday. This is a fun event for the whole family - especially the children, with exhibits of vegetables, fruit, crafts, and animals, complete with Hay Rides and more. If you would like to volunteer (and lot's fun too) you can call Judy Pockriss at 516-572-8406. The Fair is held at Old Bethpage Village Restoration and you can tour the restored Village also. Muriel and Al Urban have always volunteered a day at the Fair and in costume too.

Happy birthday wishes to to Jane Nelson, who celebrates her special day around Labor Day. I'll bet her family is planning a nice celebration. May she have a wonderful day, a great year, and good health and much happiness.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Frances and John Bermann, who will celebrate their 63rd Anniversary on September 2nd. What a wonderful milestone and such a lovely couple. May they have a great day and much happiness and good health in the year to come.

Now to leave you on a light note to start your Labor Day weekend - A thought to remember. Even back in Grandpa's time, there was something to make you sleep...... they called it work! Have a wonderful weekend and a safe one. This is also the end of the pool season so maybe I'll see you there.
