War on Cancer- The Environmental Connection The provocative, newly released film War on Cancer will be shown on Monday, September 24, at 7 pm at the Adelphi University Center Ballroom, Garden City, Long Island. Admission is free but reservations are required; call 516-877-4325. Since Richard Nixon declared the war on cancer in 1971, the medical establishment has focused primarily on producing pharmaceutical weapons. War on Cancer explores an entirely different approach to the war that is taking hold on a worldwide basis, showing compelling studies that link the environment with cancer. The film carefully documents a paradigm shift in regard to policies that have allowed chemicals to accumulate in the environment and in the bodies of virtually all people on earth. For the last several decades, government policies have granted the tens of thousands of industrial chemicals already in commerce a strong "presumption of innocence," with companies largely free to produce and use such chemicals in the absence of "absolute proof" of harm. A growing recognition is emerging within the worldwide scientific community that emphasizes that exposure to environmental toxins and interaction with our genes is directly related to the onset of chronic diseases such as cancer. Assembling a vast amount of expertise through incisive, uncompromising interviews with worldwide experts, this not-to-be-missed film studies the volatile combination of political power, corporate influence and media hype that surround the war on cancer. An interactive discussion of the film will follow with Laura Weinberg of the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program sponsors the event.
