Historical Society Plans Consignment Shop Opening

During the Society's annual Flea Market in June, Jill Mayer, left, consignment shop coordinator, and Kris Harder, director, opened the shop doors to give visitors a preview. The Garden City Historical Society is seeking items for its new consignment shop. Please don't hesitate to call.
Many residents miss browsing at the Garden City Exchange and finding special pieces that go perfectly in their homes or make a unique gift for a friend or family member. In the tradition of the Exchange, the Garden City Historical Society is planning to open the A.T. Stewart Exchange, a consignment shop at the Society's Museum on Eleventh Street. The Society hopes to bring back those wonderful opportunities, and needs your help.

A local consignment shop is a convenient place for people to bring items that are in excellent condition but have outlived their places in our homes. The Historical Society consignment shop staff is looking for people with interesting items to sell, especially residents who are downsizing their homes, moving or disposing of items from an estate. Our staff is careful, courteous and knowledgeable in sales technique. They will be watchful of items that come into the shop and notify the owners when their pieces have sold.

The consignment shop will receive a small percentage of each sale, and those proceeds will benefit the Historical Society's general fund, allowing the Society to continue the restoration and preservation of the Society's Museum (an 1872 "Apostle" House), the upkeep of the Museum and its expanding Archive collection, the publi-cation of its newsletter, Historical Notes, and the presentation of informative lectures and events. In addition, a successful consignment shop will help the Society continue to educate community members about the history and heritage of Garden City.

Anyone interested in bringing their items to the consignment shop may call Kris Harder (747-1774), Jill Mayer (747-8759) or Peggy Griffin (873-9096) for details. The Historical Society looks forward to opening its shop in September. The days and hours of operation, and a schedule for accepting consignment items, will be announced in the coming weeks in the Garden City News. Come browse, come shop, come vol-unteer.
