News From The Children's Room

Summer days are rapidly dwindling down to the end. Take some time and visit the library where you can cool off and have an adventure with new friends and new books!

The New York Aquarium at Coney Island is celebrating it's 50th Anniversary this year. They donated free passes to Nassau County Libraries. A contest was held in the children's room and twenty five lucky Garden City families each won four admission passes to the aquarium.

Winner of the guessing game for Week 8 was Brendan Coors! He guessed the amount of 500 pasta shapes and won a book. The actual amount was 489! Congratulations Brendan! One additional raffle was held and the lucky winners won excellent children's books! Congratulations to all!

Registration for the Fall Story times will begin on Saturday, September 8 at 9:00AM. Registration can be in person or on line at www.gardencitypl.org! Special needs children are welcome with adult. The schedule will be as follows:

Book club discussions will begin in October. Registration is to begin September 8 at 9:00 AM. Schedule and book information are as follows:

Chapter Chat - for children presently enrolled in the Second Grade. Each session is on a Wednesday and will start at 4:00 PM and last for 45 minutes. The first session is October 10 - "Grandma's Trick or Treat" by Emily Arnold McCully and the second is November 7 - "Amelia Bedelia 4 Mayor" by Peggy Parish.

New Friends in a Book Club for children presently enrolled in Third Grade. Program is 45 minutes on Wednesdays at 5:00 PM. October 17 - "The Littles and the Great Halloween Scare" by John Peterson and November 28 - "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" by Barbara Robinson.

Go Forth! Fourth Grade Book Club - For children presently enrolled in the Fourth Grade. Program is 45 minutes on Wednesdays at 5:00 - 5:45 PM. October 17 - The Spiderwick Chronicles, Book 1, "The Field Guide" by Tony DiTerlizzi. Perfect for those that liked Harry Potter! November 28 - "The Whipping Boy" an award-winning book by Sid Fleischman,

The Page Turners - for children presently in the Fifth Grade. A 45-minute program on Mondays at 5:45 PM. October 22nd - "Tuck Everlasting" by Natalie Babbitt and November 26 - "Kensuke's Kingdom" by Michael Morpurgo. Bring dinner and dessert and beverage will be served!

Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
