Socially Speaking
With Athena

One week to go and it will be Labor Day - the official end of the summer season. Of course, the weather will still be warm and things will still be happening, but the pool will be closed, the schools will be open, and the casual life style will come to a halt. Make the most of it while you can. Things were different in the olden days - pools stayed open through the second week of September and the water was still warm. The children were in school, it's true, but little was done on the social scene as all the adults, who were not working, spent most of their days dreaming and planning for the fall season that would soon be on them. It was a slower time and you could smell those last roses of the summer.

September 28 th will see Chris and Terry Digan hosting the "Tastings with a Twist" from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at their home for the benefit of the Garden City Unit of the American Cancer Society. If you haven't gotten your invitation, call Chris at 248-3909. This is a wonderful way to start off your fall season by getting together with friends at "The Tastings" and helping a very worthy cause in addition. See you there!

Vacations are over and just a wonderful memory and that is what it was for Michele and Jerry Weisberg , who enjoyed a wonderful cruise down the coast of Norway. What a beautiful sight it must of been. I have heard from others who did that tour that they never knew there were so many ways to prepare herring, but the scenery was just great.

The lap swimmers don't have too much time left at the pool, but for those who reside at the Wyndham - such as Joan Kuster and Barbara Seale - there is no problem as they can swim all year.

The Women's Club of the Garden City Country Club held its August Luncheon/Bridge on the 16 th of August. The first couple to deal, bid and make a Small Slam was Joan Stewart and Fran Kaiser . The happy winner of the Door Prize was Pat Sheehan . There was no Grand Slam bid and made and Chairlady Muriel Urban announced that the next Bridge would be held on Thursday, September 13 th. Enjoying the afternoon were Marie Deery, Helen Gentile, Jean Tomitz, Lillian Berryman, and Ada Kane. Ada got a warm welcome as she has not been seen for quite a while and all were happy to see her.

Michael Wigler , a geneticist leading Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's search for the genetic basis of autism, graduated from Garden City High School in the mid 1960's and is someone we should all be proud of. He has done research at the lab for 30 years and he was in the forefront of scientists who developed the tools to probe cancer's DNA among many other things. A number of Garden City residents still remember him - such as Frank Hall and his mother Sue Hall. I think we should all tip our hats to this man.

Happy birthday greetings go to Barbara Haynes and to Peter Karejwa, who celebrate their special days as August wanes down. May you have a wonderful day and a great year ahead with many more to come. Enjoy good health and much happiness.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Carol and Bob Sexton, who will celebrate their 53 rd anniversary just about now and also to Miriam and Richard Benack, who mark their 50 th anniversary on the 31 st of August. Their family hosted a very festive party for them at the Garden City Hotel that was attended by old school chums, relatives, and friends of long standing. May both couples have a wonderful year ahead of them and enjoy good health and much happiness with many more years of wedded bliss to come.

Hofstra University's production of Cafe Coward - a tribute to the words and music of Noel Coward drew some theater lovers from Garden City and among them were Sally and Tom Richmond along with Tom's sister, Paula Howe and Martha Widner. From their lips to your ears - the show was a hit.

Did you know? Honey is as old as written history, dating back to 2100 B.C., where it was mentioned in Sumerian and Babylonian cuneiform writings and was the first and most widespread sweetener used by man. Well, now you do know.
