Socially Speaking
With Athena

Boy, since I mentioned the new game craze, Mah Jongg, I have had many folks talk to me about it. But the best information I received was from two former Garden City residents now living and playing MAH JONGG out at Peconic Landing in Greenport. Dorothy Sedat was the teacher and Dorothy Holl the student and they both still read the Garden City News to keep up with us. The game is said to date back to 960 A.D. and may have been invented by Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher. It was played in the book "The Joy Luck Club" and the movie "Driving Miss Daisy." It exercises your brain, develops strategy, and provides a backdrop for friendships. So if you hear "I Bam, 6 Crack, Red Dragon, or MAH JONGG," you know folks are playing the NEW/OLD Game.

The Garden City Country Club held its Dinner/Bridge this past week and attendance was up as people heard about the menu changes. Although there was no Small Slam or Grand Slam made during the evening, everyone had a good time. It was not until after the competition ended that Carmel Quill announced that, although she was a bit late, she wanted everyone to know that she and her partner just made a Small Slam. Enjoying the dinner and the evening were: Ethlyn Anderl, Jackie West, Lucille Tiltiz, Athena and John Philippides, Georgene Harrison, Barbara and Bill Haynes, and Elizabeth and Charles Dunleavy, with Irene and John Christie. The Christies just returned from a few weeks enjoying themselves at a lake in New Hampshire. Pat Webert was also there and was told that she was missed at the Garden City Pool. She promised to get back into the swing of things real soon. Bridge Chairlady, Muriel Urban, announced that next Dinner/Bridge would be held on Wednesday, September 5th, which should help combat the after Labor Day let down. Don't forget to make reservations.

Virginia McNamara does her pool walking in a very classy say. She sports a beautiful white straw hat and I have noticed that she now has company, as I have seen someone with a pretty natural straw hat with some pretty flowers on the front brim. Both ladies lend class to pool walking and good for them.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Dorothy Alford, who celebrates her special day on the 18th of this month and to Charles Dunleavy who celebrates on the 21st of August. May both have a wonderful day and a great year ahead filled with health and happiness and many more years to come.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Michele and Paul Dyrland, who will be celebrating their 33rd Anniversary and to Linda and Bob Wagner, who will celebrate their anniversary on the 22nd of this month. May both happy couples have many more years of wedded bliss and enjoy nothing but good health and much happiness.

Ingrid Glorioso and Joanne Reglabuto had a great day for the Member-Guest Tournament they chaired last week at the Garden City Country Club. The prizes looked great so the happy winners had nothing but big smiles on their faces. They picked a good day between two heavy rainstorms. We may all consult you two regarding weather conditions when we make our plans from now on.

Those invitations are out now for the Friendship Luncheon sponsored by the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead on Tuesday, September 25th and they are creating quite a stir. Ruth Lacy will be taking the reservations and from what I hear you should get yours in A.S.A.P.

The Long Island Choral Society, which was founded right here at the Cathedral of the Incarnation seventy-eight years ago, will be performing at Carnegie Hall in Gustav Mahler's Eighth Symphony under the baton of Charles Dodsley Walker. If you want your name in the Carnegie Hall program, as well as in their Concert Benefit Invitation, send your check to Melanie Henderson, made payable to The Long Island Choral Society at P.O. Box 8047, Garden City, N.Y. 11530. It's always good to support one of our own.

See you at the pool!
