Children's Museum's Summer Exhibit: "It's a Blast!"

Visitors have been blown away all summer long as they visit the Long Island Children's Museum's traveling exhibit, AirPlay. Air cannons, sail boats, mazes, fans, air streams and hoses have provided children (and adults) with fun tools to learn about wind, currents, turbulence, and air pressure.

The museum has planned a week of special workshops to allow visitors to put their new found knowledge to the test as they design kites, gliders, wind chimes and air art during the last week of the exhibit's stay at the Children's Museum.

Program and Performance Schedule

AirPlay Series: Let's Go Fly a Kite!

Tuesday, August 28 at12:30and2:30 p.m.

Learn about the history of kites and explore many different types of these flying masterpieces. Make and decorate your own kite to take home. If the weather permits, we'll test our kites in a flying lesson across the street at Mitchel Field.

Age: 6 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).

Live at LICM - Laughter with Chip Bryant

Tuesday August 28 at1:30 p.m.

Laughing is so-o-o-o good for you! Come learn why from comedian, clown, juggler and registered nurse, Chip Bryant. Learn why laughing makes you feel better. Come tell a joke and make others laugh. Learn to make yourself laugh. Have Fun and Laugh at LICM!

Age: 5 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 for LICM members) $6 theater only.

Whimsical Wind Chimes

Wednesday, August 29 at12:30and2:30 p.m.

Have you ever heard the sweet sounds of wind chimes? Explore the power and make predictions about wind through some exciting weather-related activities. Create your own whimsical wind chime using a variety of recycled materials to hang outside your own home.

Age: 6 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).

Wednesday, August 29 at1:30 p.m.

Have you ever read Strega Nona and other books by author Tomie dePaola? Join actress and singer Lee Knight on stage to bring these stories to life with music and theater activities. Join us and become part of the story.

Age: 4 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members). $6 theater only.

Live at LICM - Science ofMotionwith Kiara Bennett

Thursday, August 30 at1:30 p.m.

Our talented dance expert Kiara will work with the audience tocreate a dance of the human body. Learn the rhythm of the heart, the pattern of the lungs and how to use the energycreated in our stomachs.

Age: 5 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members). $6 theater only.

Reel Fun at LICM - The LittleMole

Friday, August 31 at1:30 p.m.

Come delight in the cartoons of theCzech Republic. Learn about the delightful cartoons ofZden_k Millercreated in the early 1960s from LICM educator Savtava Stern. Krtek, the little mole, gets into all kinds of unique situations that will keep the whole family laughing. (45 minutes).

Age: 3 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members). $6 theater only.

Summer Art Series: Czech-American Cartoon

Wednesday, August 29 at2 p.m.

Czech cartoonist Zden_k Milercreated a very famous cartoon series starring a character called The LittleMole. Come join us to learn what this cartoon has in common with American cartoons and try your hand at capturing this adorable character's image during this fun workshop!

Age: 7 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).

Can air make art? Join in the fun as we have a blastcreating our own abstract painting using air, ink and our imaginations! Using a straw and your own wind power,create a unique design by blowing ink across a page. Enhance yourcreation using colored pencils for a beautiful stained glass effect.

AirPlaySeries: Up in the Air

Friday, August 31 at12:30and2:30 p.m.

Join us as we explore the "ins and outs" of air. Discover the power of this invisible force as you observe and try a variety of "air-mazing" experiments. Design and engineer your own gliders and flying machines that are fueled by the flowing energy of air!

Age: 5 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).

KIDS FIRST! Film Club

Friday, August 31 at4:30 p.m.

Join us every Friday afternoon as we enjoyfilms selected for young children and their parents. Now Showing: Jay Jay the Jet Plane in Jay Jay's Wing Wigglin' Mystery

Come enjoythe exciting adventures of the perky and curious six-year-old jet plane, Jay Jay and his airplane friends. They live and play atTarrytownAirport, a place where imagination takes flight. Each Jay Jay episode includes valuable life lessons for young children that teach lessons about cooperation, teamwork, responsibility, science and nature. (70 minutes).

Age: 2 and up. KIDS FIRST! Film Club Fee: $6 ($3 for LICM members or with museum admission).

Sandlot

Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2 at1:30 p.m.

Scotty Smalls is new to the neighborhood, but his lack of baseball talent is making it hard for him to fit in. When Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez recruits Smalls to play with his neighborhood gang at a nearby sandlot, it's the beginning of a magical summer. Vocal talent provided by Karen Allen, Denis Leary and James Earl Jones. (101 minutes)

Start your LICM visit with a stop at AirPlay,the latest addition to our traveling gallery. Take part in an air race, navigate air mazes and fire off an air cannon. Ten exciting hands-on exhibits allow visitors to explore the nature of air: how it moves and its impact on our environment. Get ready to be air-mazed! Enjoyour special AirPlay workshop series August 28-31!

Community Gallery- Musings: What Inspires Us!

Join us for the 4th Annual LICM Staff and Volunteer art exhibition. Throughout the month of August, visitors can view the artistic endeavors that fuel thecreative individuals that surround you in the museum.
