The Garden City Pool was the place to be this past week with the temperatures up to 90 or more. The water was warmer, but was still able to cool you off. Even the exercise classes got the same number of ladies into the swing of things. Joyce Clarke was there enjoying both the sun, the water and conversations with friends. Louise Butler was there dividing her time between the bridge table and joining in the exercises at 1 p.m. The gal who runs them is good and she provides music to help you keep in time and it works. The Garden City Country Club was chosen by the Helen Keller Foundation for its annual Golf Tournament on July 30th and they had a good day and a nice turnout. The next day the ladies of the Garden City Country Club held their Babe Zaharias "Swing for a Cure" Tournament under the Chairmanship of Marie Caputo and Rosalie O'Brien. They did a great job and everyone joined them in wearing pink for the day. Good work, ladies. Happy Birthday wishes go to Nancy Fardleman, who celebrates her special day on the 10th of August, to Claire Hestenberg, who claims August 11th as her special day, to Madeline Wittman, who does the same on the 12th, and to Marjorie Brown, who does ditto on the 13th. Boy, what a busy week this will be. May all these lovely ladies have a wonderful day and a great year and enjoy nothing but good health and much happiness with many more years to come. Belated Happy Birthday wishes to go to Edward Brennan, who celebrated his special day on the 6th of this month and to Edward Alford, who does his celebrating on the 12th. Have a great year and many more great years to come. Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Laura and Steve Bergman who celebrate on the 11th of August and may they have many more years of wedded bliss. The winner in the wedding anniversary department this month are the Coffins - Florence and Bill, who mark 66 years of togetherness this month. All our best wishes go to them. What a wonderful record - one to be very proud of. Good luck to both of you. Here is a bridge players alert! The folks at the Cherry Valley Club will be kicking off the season for their popular Dinner Bridge with a change of date - Saturday, September 15th and I also hear that there will be valet parking to boot. If you were planning on the 3rd Wednesday, change your plans and check with the club. Overheard at the Pool recently as some of our folks were in the remembering mode were the following MEET ME UNDER THE CLOCK and everyone knew that meant the clock in the lobby of the HOTEL Astor on Broadway between 44th and 45th Street - no longer with us. In the favorite sandwich, the winner heads down was cream cheese on date and nut bread at the Nedick's counter. For an ice cream soda, nothing beat Schraffts. Oh, for the good old days. And now for more of those lazy, days of summer…… See you at the Pool!
