At around 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 1st, Garden City firefighters were called to a reported kitchen fire at 109 Wyatt Road. Volunteer Captain Tony Adams was the first officer to arrive on scene and transmitted a "working fire" at the location. Captain Adams encountered a heavy fire condition in the first floor kitchen area with fire blowing out the rear side windows of the home. Volunteer Fire Chief John P. Casey, along with his Assistant Chiefs, Jim Meehan, Bill Graham and Charles Cavarra, arrived at the blaze soon after the alarm sounded and directed fireground operations. 46 Garden City Firefighters, including 42 Garden City volunteer firefighters, 5 headquarters company firefighters as well as additional mutual aid assistance from neighboring volunteer fire departments, including Mineola and Westbury, assisted at the blaze.
Garden City firefighters formulated an aggressive interior attack to fight the blaze. Captain Tony Adams and Lieutenant Eric Ahlfeld coordinated initial primary searches, and Lt. Pete Clancy advanced the initial hose team into the home. Utilizing several handlines, firefighters brought the blaze under control quickly, minimizing extension in the home. According to Fire Chief John Casey, "our large firefighter turnout and rapid response helped contain the fire quickly." He added, "fortunately, with the high heat of the summer, none of our firefighters were injured battling the blaze." The fire is under routine investigation.
