Band Of Long Island To Perform

North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman announced today that the Band of Long Island would be performing at Bar Beach Park in Port Washington on August 8, 2007, beginning at 7:30 PM, as part of the Town's summer concert and movies series. He also announced that he would contribute a special reading of "Casey at the Bat" prior to the concert.

"This performance by the Band of Long Island is not to be missed," Kaiman said. "While North Hempstead is providing quality entertainment all summer long at all of our parks, this performance by the Band of Long Island promises to be something special"

The Supervisor further announced that normal parking fees collected at Bar Beach Park would be waived for this event.

The Band of Long Island, under the direction of Michael Flamhaft, has 50 members, with the following instrumentation: 2 flutes; 1 piccolo; 2 oboes; 2 bassoons; 14 clarinets; 1 alto clarinet; 1 bass clarinet; 2 alto saxes; 1 tenor sax; 1 baritone sax; 4 horns; 6 trumpets; 3 trombones; 1 baritone horn; 3 tubas; 1 string bass; 1 timpani and 2 percussion instruments.

The Band of Long Island was founded in the fall of 1995 after more than 2 years of serious discussions among a group of Long Island's leading wind players. Members come from all walks of life - some are music teachers or other music professionals, and the rest are avocational players who perform on a professional level.

The Band's repertoire includes music from traditional marches and classical transcriptions, arrangements from the big band days, and Broadway and Hollywood favorites.

A performance by Yukako Tarumi's children's violin group will begin the concert.
