Socially Speaking
With more people on the roads in the Summer season, I know that you have noticed all the road work that is going on. How could you miss it! We have had our share right here in town. However, we are all happy to ride on those new roads and feel the smoothness under our cars and wish that more roads were being fixed. That does not mean that we are happy with the detours the work brings about and we do complain about it. Why can't they fix the roads some other time? Now you all know the answer to that - you can't fix them in the winter because it's too cold and you get rain in the spring and in fall you have the leaf problem as well as cold and rain. So don't complain - leave time for the detours, arrive relaxed, and think of it as a life lesson. There as a lot of partying going on recently at the Garden City Country Club. It started off with a bar-be-que night with the addition of Dancing Under the Stars. Among those enjoying the food, the music, the dancing, and the beautiful stars above were: Marge and Ed Brown, Elizabeth and Charles Dunleavy, Nancy and John Patula, and Dorothy and Ed Alford. Lynn and Leroy Boisen , twilight golfers, greeted old friends while passing through from the course. Florence Dieterich gave a lovely party to honor hubby Al on the occasion of his 80th Birthday. Their son Douglas and his wife Kathy, sons Kevin and Keith, their Grandson, and friends Blanche and Don Muller, Doris and Werner Forster, Anne and Cono Comunale, Joe Hayes, Mary Gagliardo, and Marye Heston were among many others, enjoyed saying Happy Birthday to Al. He also welcomed men with whom he had worked for many before his retirement. But Al, always so busy with one thing or another, you wonder, has he really retired? The Garden City Pool scene was going strong with the advent of sun and high humidity. Among those enjoying the cool waters were Jean Priest, Pauline and Bob Rudkin, Rosemary Brown, Jackie West, and Ruth LaBosco. Helga Otte was also there but she was not swimming. The heavy rains of a week or so ago caused water in her basement. She slipped on the wet floor, fell and broke her wrist. She is hoping for a speedy mend so she can get in the water again. We hope so too, Helga. August 4th will be a very busy day for Birthdays. Celebrating on that day are Laurie Hazlet, Walter Farrell, Norman Short (92), and Donna Selover, a long time resident who now lives in Glen Cove. May they all enjoy a wonderful day, a great year ahead, and many more years of health and happiness. Doris and Werner Forster will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary on August 9. May they enjoy many more years of wedded bliss in health and happiness. Spotted in town a sign of getting ready for the fall season were workmen redoing the staircase on the Cathedral Avenue entrance to the Garden City Casino. The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead will be holding its annual Friendship Luncheon on Tuesday, September 25th at the Cherry Valley Club at 12 Noon. The invitations are in the mail so get your friends together and get your reservations in right away. This is always the start to that organization's many wonderful programs and tours. Did you know? Some trees had many uses and the following dogwood is a good example. The Indians used the frayed twigs as tooth brushes. The roots were boiled to produce a red dye for cloth, and the hard wood was used for tool handles. Now that will give you something to think about this week. See you at the Pool.
