Sherry Reinhardt Sherry Reinhardt, 62, died peacefully at her home in Berkeley, CA on June 28 after a year and a half battle with ovarian cancer -- a battle that she fought with incredible grace and courage to the very end. Her loving and devoted husband, daughters and dear friends were at her side. She will be remembered for her smile and contagious laugh, intellectual curiosity, and desire to live life to its fullest. "Sherry had an amazing ability to listen and to be there in the moment for others, and cared for so many people in the community," said Marvin Brookner, Ms. Reinhardt's husband of 30 years and the former public defender of Solano County, CA. Well known for her commitment and energy to helping and supporting new mothers, Sherry began her work in an era when Dr. Spock was many parents' only expert resource. Considered an expert on parenting issues, she was often cited by local and national media. As quoted in a San Francisco paper, "If you've had a baby in Berkeley during the past two decades, you've probably heard of Sherry Reinhardt." Over the years, more than 6000 women participated in Sherry's support groups for new mothers. Sherry enjoyed a full and active life in the community. She loved to travel and especially enjoyed time with her family in Lake Tuolumne each summer in Yosemite National Park. Her hobbies included photography, practicing yoga, step aerobics, tending her beautiful backyard garden, walking the Berkeley Hills and enjoying conversation, wine and food with family and friends. She was born in St. Petersburg, FL and later raised in Garden City. She is a graduate of Garden City High School Class of 1962 and earned a nursing degree from the University of Connecticut. Sherry worked in public health in Boston, visited pregnant women and new babies postpartum, ran a Family Planning Clinic and worked with the health component of the Poverty Program. These experiences led to her pursuit of a Masters Degree in Public Health from University of California at Berkeley. Following graduate school, she joined the faculty of Berkeley's Public Health Department. During this time, she met her husband and following the birth of their first child, she was amazed at the intensity of the postpartum experience and often felt totally overwhelmed and isolated. Finding no active mothers groups available, she organized one for herself and hired a facilitator. She spent the next 30 years organizing more than 6,000 first-time mothers into community based groups, which she facilitated. Sherry's guiding philosophy was that "there is no 'one' right answer to parenting. The journey is to uncover a path that works for you, your family and each child's unique temperament. Parenting is the most challenging work I have ever undertaken and also the most wonderful." Sherry is survived by her husband Marvin Brookner of Berkeley, two daughters Sasha Brookner and Emma Brookner of Los Angeles, mother Eileen Reinhardt formerly of Garden City, sisters Susan Reinhardt of Brookline, MA, Elizabeth Reinhardt of Aldie, VA, Patricia Reinhardt of Wayland, MA, and brothers Charles Reinhardt of Bedford, MA and Mark Reinhardt of Plantation, FL. A service in celebration of Sherry's life was held on July 22 in Berkeley and a fund to help mothers in need has been set up in Sherry's name. Donations may be made to The Sherry Reinhardt Memorial Fund in care of The East Bay Community Foundation, De Domenico Building, 200 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Oakland, CA 94612 or online at www.ebcf.kintera.org.
