What a week we had and weren't we lucky it was not worse. While some of our roads were flooded and some folks did have water in their basements, and there were accidents, there was no loss of life or homes destroyed. Most of the water was gone the next day and the basements were cleared in a couple of days. The sun came out and we were back to summer. But make no mistake abut it - it was a wake up call for one and all. When you have a storm like that, stay home and wait it out. Getting somewhere is not worth your life or someone else's.

It was a busy week also. The Retired Men's Club had a great crowd out for their annual Coed Cocktail Party. Enjoying the festivities were Louise and Tom Butler, Stephanie Bird, Barbara and Bill Haynes, Carolyn and Rudy Kaiser, Joe Keating, Past President, Ed Palkot, Pauline and Bob Rudkin, Jean and Walter Tomitz, and a host of others. There was music for those inclined to listen or dance and the food was great with a wide variety. Past President Al Urban was Chairman of the event and his helpers were, Rudy Kaiser, Art Mercante, Gary Metzler, Walter Tomitz, and Bruce Littlejohn. Current President, Joe Leto, had every reason to be delighted as they had the largest crowd since 1998 (102 people).

The Pool scene was on and off this past week due to the weather, but Louise Butler, Carol Countryman, and Dorothea deLannoy all appeared on one day or another. There are always the exercise classes and a friend or two to chat with.

Marjorie and Ed Brown were very busy in June as they attended the graduations of their three granddaughters - Margaret from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Sarah from the Holy Cross College, and Erin from Kellenberg High School. What a month - congrats to all the ladies and to grandma and grandpa for attending all of them.

The ladies of the Garden City League of Helen Keller Services For the Blind are busy planning their fund-raising card party on the 11th of October - a Thursday at the Garden City Community Church. Please save the date as this is always a great affair.

The Ladies Lunch/Bridge at the Garden City Country Club w held on Thursday, July 19th and there were 27 tables in play after lunch. The first Grand Slam was brought in early in the day by Louise Butler and Win Eustice in 7 No Trump. The Small Slam was made by Elaine Doyle and Pat Dolan in 6 Spades. The monthly Door Prize was won by Sue Hall. Bridge Chairlady Muriel Urban announced that the next Bridge would be held on Thursday, August 16th. Long time residents, Jan and Hal Knight, were in from the East End to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of Hal's sister and brother-in-law at the Garden City Country Club and were happy to greet old friends from town.

Happy birthday wishes go to Marye Heston, who will be celebrating her special day on July 29th. May she have a wonderful day and a great year ahead in which to enjoy health and happiness and many more years to come.

The folks at the Cherry Valley Club enjoyed beautiful music by the Long Island Senior Symphony Orchestra. They provided classical music on the patio, preceeded by a delightful cocktail Hour and followed by a table of extradinary delights to go with the coffee and tea at the end of the evening. Among those enjoying the evening were Eleanor Singer, Adele Riley, Eleanor Porter, Arthur Hug, Edith and Roger Gerber and Claire and Richard Burns. A good time was had by all.

See you all next week - at the pool.
