To expand on the 10th and 11th grade curriculum, the Social Studies Department hosted speaker Irving Roth, Director of the Holocaust Resource Center at Temple Judea of Manhasset. Mr. Roth spoke to the students on February 13, 2007 about his experiences growing up in Czechoslovakia during World War II and the horrors that he endured at Auschwitz and Buchenwald. He told of the heartwarming reunion after the war with his parents, who had remained hidden in Budapest. Mr. Roth gave the students not only a first-hand account of history, but also a lesson on the dangers of intolerance and discrimination in our world. Irving Roth has written and co-written many books; such as Adopt a Survivor-An Antidote to Holocaust Amnesia (2003) and Bondi's Brother (2004). In 2004 he also received the "Spirit of Anne Frank Outstanding Citizen Award" from the Anna Frank Center USA for promoting human rights and social justice.
The work was an Arts-in-Education presentation, a program coordinated by the Arts-in Education Committee of the Garden City School District Parent Teacher Association and funded by the Garden City Union Free School District.
