Girl Scout Troop 1636 Visits Washington, DC

Kristen, Sammy, Emily, Genny on the bus to D.C.
Four members from Girl Scout Troop 1636 in Garden City attended the 95th Birth-day of Girl Scouts National Singa-Long in Washington, DC in June. Genny, Sammy, Emily and Kristen from Troop 1636 spent two exciting days in the capitol with Mrs. Quigley and Mrs. LaRose, their leaders for the trip. First they toured the Nation's capitol building with their personal guide, Shannon, who works at the capitol. Shannon is a personal aide to Carolyn McCarthy, and a Garden City native. Shannon gave the girls an educational tour of the capitol Saturday morning. Next the girls went to the National Mall by the Washington Monument and spent the afternoon singing and swapping with thousands of other scouts. The girls met Girl Scouts from across the country as they traded hand made trinkets to commemorate the occasion, called SWAPS. The next day the girls and their two leaders visited Arlington Cemetery, and then the National Air and Space Museum. They returned on the council bus to Garden City with a new appreciation for their national capitol and Girl Scouts. 400,000 girls and leaders attended this National Event, all using the subways to get to the Washington monument! It was very exciting to see so many dedicated Scouts in one place!
