Outstanding Faculty Award
Dr. Farley, a former Garden City resident, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1982 from Cornell University in Natural Resources and his Masters of Science in Biology from Kansas State University in 1987. He continued for his Ph.D. in biology at the University of New Mexico. Currently, he is a professor of Biology at Fort Hays State University, and Associate Curator of Ornithology at FHSU Sternberg Museum of Natural History.. Dr. Farley says his interest in biology was fostered during his years at Garden City High School by outstanding teachers such as Dr. Harold Turkel, Dr. Julian Kane and Mrs. Eileen Hussey. Dr. Farley's mother, Cahterine Healy still resides in Garden City. The Alumni Association instituted the Pilot award in 1974 to emphasize the importance of excellence in teaching and learning. It is presented every year at the Graduate and Faculty Brunch in advance of Commencement. The Pilot Award is given on the basis of classroom excellence, ongoing research and service activities. Candidates are nominated by graduating seniors.
