Socially Speaking With Athena Summer may not be the time for heavy reading, but at least you don't have as many distractions on a hot day. On my short list for recommendations are "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow published in 2004 to be followed by "Fallen Founder" by Nancy Isenberg. The presentation of Hamilton is good and just about what you expect from what we learned about him in our history classes. Aaron Burr featured prominently in the book on Hamilton but when you read "Fallen Founder" you get a whole new picture of him and his life. Indeed, you discover that politics have not changed very much - it's only the technology that they use today. "Fallen Founder" is a much fairer book to Burr than you would remember from history, but together they give you a more complete picture. Both books are at the Garden City Library. The Garden City Country Club held its Ladies/Luncheon/Bridge on Thursday, June 21st and they had 32 tables in play after lunch. The first couple to deal, bid, and make a Small Slam was Dorothy Jennings and Carmel Quill and they did it in 6 Spades. A Grand Slam was finally made by Betty McCarthy and Jean Coghlan in 7 Clubs. The monthly Door Prize was won by Joan Cowie. Enjoying the afternoon were Anne Comunale, Marie Deery, Peg Mumm, Gloria Tassone, Mary Hassett and Ada Kane. Bridge Chairlady, Muriel Urban announced that the next Bridge would be held on Thursday, July 19th. She also announced that the monthly schedule sent to members of the club had a typo that indicated another date, but that the 19th was indeed the correct day. Do make your reservations for that date. Things are still hopping at the Garden City Library what with the Monday Matinees and the Thursday flicks and all the other offerings. Many of these events are due to the work of Sal and Tom, (Catania and Richmond) and those two are doing a really great job. Next time you attend, tell them how much you appreciate their efforts. I know that I do. Michele and Jerry Weisberg had a wonderful weekend down in Willmenton, Del. recently visiting with their son and especially with their 4 year old grandson. They all enjoyed a visit to the Strasburgh Steam Train and no one more than that 4 year old. Trips like this are really fun for the whole family and for any generation. Try it! The Friends of the Adelphi University Library held their last meeting until the fall and welcomed Gloria Jones to their Board. She immediately joined the Prize Committee for the 60th Anniversary Luncheon and celebration which will be followed by a program by Inez Powell of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This will take place on Sunday, November 18th at the Ruth Harley Center on the campus. Happy Birthday wishes go to that Yankee Doodle Lady, Dorothy Holl who was born on the 4th of July. May your day be merry and may you have many more birthdays and enjoy them in health and in happiness. Marilyn and Fred Camp will be celebrating their wedding anniversary just about that same date (and all the flags will be flying) and we also wish them many more years of wedded bliss to enjoy in good health and much happiness. Marie Caputo and Rosalie O'Brien are chairing the Babe Zaharias "Swing for a Cure" Tournament on July 31st starting at 8 a.m. This is an annual event for the ladies of the Garden City Country Club Golf Tournament and is not the only one that they schedule to help good causes. Good luck and good weather, ladies. Now that it's officially summer time here is another thought to get you thinking. Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle? It sticks to everything else. Happy thinking! See you next week and maybe at the pool.
