Mollie's Fund Presentation To 6TH Grade Class
Students viewed the video, "The Dark Side of the Sun". This film created by the foundation addresses the necessity of sun protection, the dangers of tanning beds and the importance of mole identification. Dr. Daly reviewed the highlights of the film and answered student's questions. Mrs. Noreen Bonagura, GCMS Social Worker, announced a writing contest for the students. Students were encouraged to write a letter to a friend, encouraging them to use safe sun practices, learned from the film, during the summer. The winner will be awarded a $100 American Express Gift Certificate and their letter will be posted on the GCMS website. Students received hats as a reminder to protect themselves in the summer sun. The foundation was created after Mollie Biggane, a Garden City resident, died of melanoma at the age of 20. The foundation has distributed over 50,000 educational DVD/CD's to health teachers in 45 states for middle school and high school students. At the national AHPERD Conference in Baltimore, this past spring, Mollie's Fund presented their program to health educators across the country. In May, the foundation sponsored a Melanoma Educational Symposium for Long Island patients, caregivers and health care professionals. Participants were able to ask leading melanoma specialists from Memorial Sloan Kettering, Columbia University Melanoma Center and NYU Hospital about new therapies. Garden City Pool and the parks have received gallons of sunscreen as a donation from the foundation for public use. This summer, Mollie's Fund will continue to participate in local and national events for skin cancer protection and education. For more information about the foundation, go to www.molliesfund.org
