Socially Speaking With Athena Flag Day came and went, Father's Day did also, and the pool opened. We also did our usual - going from very cool to hot in the weather. Guess this is what we can expect for the rest of the summer season. The fathers got the best of it as they got the warmest weather, plenty of cards, and gifts, as well as the chance to be waited on for the whole day. There was a gremlin loose in the printing this past week and this column said that Pat Dalton would soon be back with us after being laid up for awhile. Pat Dalton is just fine - it was Pat Dolan who had undergone surgery and is doing very well now. We are sorry for the gremlin and best wishes to both lovely ladies. Adelphi University hosted a G.I. alumni reunion on June 14 th (appropriately it was Flag Day) and invited those who came to Adelphi on the G.I. Bill following World War II. It was a lovely day (wives were also invited) and the G.I.'s got to reminisce about the old days when they were the only guys on campus except for Faculty. Commander John Donovan, of the G.C. American Legion Post, was invited as he had always invited president Robert A. Scott of Adelphi to the Memorial Day exercises. The nice thing is that Dr. Scott has always attended Memorial Day and that was great as he is the only Adelphi president in any recent memory who has attended. His attendance is appreciated by the members of the Post. Alexandra Nicolosi and Olivia Lucas, the G.C. American Legion Woman's Auxiliary Delegates to Girls State, met with other delegates who would be attending Girls State this month. The ladies pick the Girls State delegates and the men of the Post pick those delegates going to Boys State. They are wonderful programs for our young people and not enough folks know about them. The Weisbergs - Michele and Jerry - are home from a recent visit with family and friends in France and we are all happy to have them home again. Welcome back! The Garden City Retired Men's Club has come up with another great party for its members and their spouses or significant others. It's their annual Coed Cocktail Party to be held on Sunday, July 15 th - come rain or come shine at the G.C. Senior Center. The Chairman of the event is Al Urban and he has arranged for "tasty bites" for all "appetites" along with the drinks that go with them. Many have been hearing about the fantastic finger foods that will be served and the invitations are out. That means - get your reservations in as this is a "Don't miss event." Come and enjoy! Happy birthday wishes go to Joe Hayes, who will be celebrating on June 28 th and to Emily Anne Bradley, who will blow out the candles on her cake on the 26 th of June. Many happy returns of the day with many more to come for both of the celebrants and much health and happiness to both. Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Arlyn and George Rath, who will be celebrating their 54 th anniversary on June 26 th. May you have many more years of wedded bliss ahead of you and get to enjoy it in health and happiness with many more years to come. It was a very Happy Father's Day for the Dieterich family as Al Dieterich is home from the hospital and taking therapy at home. Not only the family has been missing Al, but all his many friends, also. They are very happy to know that he is home and on the mend. By the time you read this, it will officially be summer so here are a couple of thoughts for you on one of those lazy, crazy days of summer. 1. Take the afternoon off and go to lunch or just sit on your porch with a cold glass of ice tea and read. 2. Call up someone you haven't spoken to in years and brighten their day and yours. 3. Solve a puzzle such as: Does pushing the elevator button more than once make it arrive faster? See you at the pool!
