Edward O. Norell

Edward O. Norell, long-time resident of Garden City (formerly of Wellington Road), died at his home in Manhattan on April 23, 2007. He succumbed after suffering a stroke in July 2006. He was 82 years old.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 31, 1924 to Lydia and Oscar Norell and raised on Kenwood Road in Garden City. He was a graduate of Garden City High School Class of 1944, served in the United States Navy during World War II, and graduated from Adelphi University in Garden City. Prior to retirement, he was Network Service Manager in Sales and Marketing for The New York Telephone Company (Verizon).

Ed was married to Marilyn Sievers Norell, also raised on Kenwood Road in Garden City, for nearly 50 years. They had three children -- Robert, Patricia and James. He was predeceased by his wife Marilyn in February 1996. The Norells were active members of The Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City.

On April 29, 2006, Ed married Sylvia Appenzellar of Manhattan and Mattituck, Long Island.

Since 1964, Ed and his family have been members of the Garden City Ski Club, where he served as Treasurer for many years. Over the years, Ed and his family made many memorable trips to the Garden City Ski Club Lodge, skiing at Mad River Glen in Vermont.

In recent years, Ed was an active member of the Nassau Golfers Club. He was a member of the Doubles Championship teams in 2000 and 2003. Ed also holds the record for the Lowest Doubles Net score posted in 2001.

He is survived by his wife Sylvia A. Norell, son Robert E. Norell of Manhattan, daughter Patricia N. Sapanski and son-in-law John W. Sapanski Jr. of Garden City, son James S. Norell and daughter-in-law Amy F. Norell of Garden City, and his four grandchildren Lauren N. Sapanski, Jill S. Sapanski, Ryan J. Norell and Emily V. Norell.
