Free Workshops For Breast Cancer Patients Psychotherapist Lynne Fain will demonstrate guided imagery and meditation during a free workshop for breast cancer patients and survivors, to be held on Tuesday, June 5, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Adelphi University. Through this experience, participants can learn how the power of imagination can be directed to stimulate changes in the body to create calm and focus. Research shows that this interactive approach can help to reduce symptoms and affect the overall outcome of many therapies. Lynne Fain, MA, LCSW, is certified in Interactive Guide Imagery. She taught meditation at Cancer Care and South Nassau Communities Hospital. She is a cancer survivor with a private practice in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Pre-registration is required. Reflexology Reflexology, the practice of stimulating nerves on the feet, hands and ears in order to encourage a beneficial effect on some other parts of the body or to improve general health, will be demonstrated to breast cancer survivors and patients on Tuesday, July 10, 7 to 8:30 pm at Adelphi University in Garden City. Carolyn McGuire, RN, BS, an ARCB Certified Reflexologist and Reiki Master, will conduct the workshop. Reflexology is a non-invasive practice with a focus on restoring balance, increasing circulation and reducing stress. participants will experience this relaxation first hand. Tai Chi Tai Chi, a series of gentle movements, sometimes described as "meditation in motion," will be demonstrated to breast cancer survivors and patients on Tuesday, August 7, from 7 to 8:30 pm at Adelphi University in Garden City. Dorothy Scott, an instructor and practitioner who teaches Tai Chi at Clark Botanical Garden and the East Williston Public Library, will conduct the workshop. In Tai Chi, the body moves very slowly in a dance-like form. This concentration on movement creates calmness for the mind and body, relieving anxiety, developing better muscle control nd improving balance and posture. With roots in ancient China, Tai Chi movements are flexible and allow each person to perform at their own ability. Studies have shown Tai Chi helps strengthen the immune system and lowers heart rate and blood pressure. Pre-registration is required. Call 516-877-4325.
