County Champs - Girls Varsity Track

The Champs after their victory lap.
With some amazing individual performances, the girl's varsity track team brought home the Class AA County Championship to Garden City. That makes back-to-back championships for the girl's varsity track team as they swept through the indoor season this past winter. The meet is run over two days at Mitchell Field and features the best runners and field event competitors in Nassau County. The County is broken down to the three classes (AAA, AA, A) that are representative of the size of schools in each. For the Spring season the girls were competing in Class AA along with rivals Hewlett, Lynbrook, Roslyn and South Side, among others. At the championship meet our girls outdistanced the competition with a total score of 115 points - 34 points better than runner up Hewlett (who, as they did in the division meet, took a 24 point advantage into the meet because of the pole vault event). It was a good first day (52 pts.) and an even better second day (63 pts.) that brought home the championship for coaches Charles Cuzzo and Erica Fregosi. Congratulations Girls And Coaches - Job Well Done!

Michelle Rotondo - County Champ - 400IH
Outstanding performances earned senior Emily Hepworth and 8th grader Michelle Rotondo the honor of County Class AA Champion with winning efforts in the 200m sprint for Emily and the 400m intermediate hurdles for Michelle. Also garnering County Champion status were the winners of the 4x100m relay team of Katy Daly, Emily Hepworth, Taryn Schmelzinger and anchor Lauren Williams and the 4x400m relay team of Katie Reilly, Taryn Schmelzinger, Katy Daly and anchor Laura Martens.

In addition to these terrific efforts, the following girls bring home All County honors by scoring points in their events: Maddie Adams in the 2000m steeplechase and the 1500m (two events performed within 20 minutes of each other!), Liz Slattery for the 3000m and 1500m, Emily Hepworth in the 100m sprint, Amanda Joyce in the shot put and discus, Michelle Rotondo for the 2000m steeplechase and 800m, Abby Hepworth in the high jump, Laura Martens in the 400m hurdles, Katy Daly in the 400m, Taryn Schmelzinger in the 400m, Barbara Sullivan in the steeplechase, and the 4x800 relay team of Lauren Williams, Katie Reilly, Jenna D'Angelo and Liz Slattery.
