The Miracle Foundation will host its eighth annual Michael J. Tenaglia Golf and Tennis Classic at Cherry Valley Club and Garden City Country Club on Monday, June 11, 2007. Since its inception, the Foundation's golf and tennis classic has been its cornerstone fundraising event. The Miracle Foundation has granted over two million dollars to help improve the lives of people diagnosed with cancer and to find a cure for the disease. The all-day program includes golf and tennis tournaments, cocktail and dinner reception and many exciting silent auction and raffle prizes. The event's sponsors include UBS, Korg USA, Smith Barney, Citigroup Private Bank, Astoria Federal Savings, Sovereign Bank, Carney Security Systems, Bank of New York, Wachovia and Dreyfus. To make a reservation, contact the foundation at 516-873-0105. This year The Miracle Foundation will honor internationally renowned cancer researcher Dr. Bert Vogelstein, presenting him with the Michael J. Tenaglia Leadership Award. Dr. Vogelstein will attend the dinner reception to accept the award. The award, given in the name of the Foundation's Founder, Michael J. Tenaglia, recognizes people who exemplify the strongest commitment to helping those touched by cancer. Dr. Vogelstein has been a grantee of the Foundation since 2001. Recently, his team announced their out-of-the-box research had moved from the laboratory into a Phase One clinical trial, targeting advanced-stage cancer patients. "Dr. Vogelstein has always pursued innovative approaches to finding a cure for cancer. We are extremely excited to honor Dr. Vogelstein. We are proud of our affiliation with such an exceptional scientist," said Joe Castronovo, Miracle Foundation President. Among Dr. Vogelstein's credits are: Clayton Professor of Oncology and Pathology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Director of the Ludwig Center for Cancer Genetics and Therapeutics. He is a Principal Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Among the awards he has received for his work are the Alfred G. Knudson Award, National Cancer Institute, Richard Lounsbery Award, National Academy of Sciences and the 2004 Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research. Dr. Vogelstein has been an editor at several esteemed magazines, including Science, Molecular Cell, Cancer Cell and The New England Journal of Medicine.
