Historical Society Annual Meeting

The Garden City Historical Society will hold its annual meeting and installation of officers in conjunction with its Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, June 6, at the Historical Society Museum, 109 Eleventh Street, 7 p.m.

The Historical Society's nominating committee consisted of past presidents Maureen Clancy and Joanne K. Adams, and board member Sally Schreier. The 2007-08 officers are: President Brian Pinnola, Vice President Joe Stanco, Treasurer Marjorie Egan, Recording Secretary Gloria Jones, and Corresponding Secretary Sally Schreier. The Society welcomes four new Board members, Bob Franz, Kathy Louros, Jill Mayer and Vicki Stanco.

Bob Franz has served as chairperson of the Society's A.T. Stewart's Flea Market event, now in its second year, and has assisted the Society as a member of the Acquisitions Subcommittee in purchasing items for its archives collection. He will manage the Society's grant request program. Kathy Louros has been working on various committees over the past few years, and is stepping up to become chairperson of Membership. Jill Mayer has served on the A.T. Stewart's Flea Market Committee for the past two years, and will co-chair the Society's newest venture, a consignment shop, which will open at the Museum this weekend during the Society's Flea Market. Vicki Stanco is returning to the Society's Board, and will be spearheading Hospitality.

The Society's membership drive is on-going. There are various membership categories to choose from: Senior Citizen (per person), $10; Individual, $25; Family, $35; Business, Institutional and Professional, $50; Sustaining, $50; and Life, $350. All members are put on the mailing list to receive the Society's newsletter, Historical Notes. Membership dues can be mailed to: The Garden City Historical Society, P.O. The Historical Society reminds residents and friends that it has two upcoming June events on its schedule: A.T. Stewart's Flea Market on the Museum grounds, 109 Eleventh Street, June 2, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a free lecture and book signing on June 13, featuring author Paul J. Mateyunas and his new book, North Shore Long Island Country Houses, 1890-1950. In addition, we will see you at the Belmont Festival on Seventh Street, June 8.

While on our website or at our June events, please look for the new selections in our "Gift Shop," including packaged notecards that feature the winning artworks from our 2006 Children's Art Contest, Landmark Buildings of Garden City; a decorative tile of "The Old Garden City Hotel;" and a brass ornament of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. We are also happy to report that we are continuing our Commemorative Brick programs and now carry the Society's famous Garden City Afghan in "blue"...check it out!
