GC Grey On a Roll The 6th Grade boys Grey Lax team continued to roll over two of their opponents this past weekend as they defeated Huntington on Sunday and a select team from Wantagh on the High School turf on Monday. Petey Kerantzes (1G, 1GB) Matt Vitale (1G, 1A, 2GBs), Justin Guterding (2G, 5 As) and Lucas Clay (2Gs, 2GBs), Brendan Fitzsimmons and Dan Weiss dominated over the Huntington defense especially in the first quarter where they outscored their opponent by a score of 5 to 1. Huntingtonbattled back but GC's defensemen, Joe Stone ( 3GBs), Kyle Skramko (2GBs), Matt Haeffner (1GB), Eric Sundius, Marc Lamar, and Ryan Dooley were able to keep the Huntington offense out of the zone and hold them to preserve the win. The Middies again proved instrumental in picking up 15 of the teams 26 ground balls to control the play and transition the team smoothly from defense to offense for the win. Timmy Muller (1G, 6GBs), JJ McDaid (2Gs, 5GBs) , Matt Schmelzinger (3GBs), Spencer Bais and Andrew Magdich (1GB) worked tirelessly from end to end. Jack Metzler moved back to midfield filling the gap left by injured John Walcyzk providing the extra support on both offense and defense. Goalie Matt Cortese didn't allow his team to get behind in the score making 9 great saves to preserve GC's win. On Monday evening Team Grey defeated their rivals from Wantagh on a beautiful evening by a score of 8 to 6. The difference in this game was definitely the hustle and determination of all the GC players who picked up 43 ground balls and allowed them to control the play throughout the game. Matt Schmelzinger, Jack Metzler, Timmy Muller and Joe Stone led that effort each hustling up 5 ground balls; Spencer Bais finding 4 of his own; and JJ McDaid, Justin Guterding, Lucas Clay, Matt Vitale, Mouse Magdich and Kyle Skramko each scooping up 3 which provided the much needed ball control to set up the offensive onslaught Justin Guterding scoring 4 goals, JJ McDaid 3 and Lucas Clay 1 to leave GC on top of Wantagh's "select" by a score of 8 to 6. Ryan Dooley (1GB), Eric Sundius, Matt Haeffner and Marc Lamarr were relentless on Wantagh's attack keeping them out of the zone, intercepting passes and making the needed precision outlet passes to the waiting midfielders on the transition. Brendan Fitzsimmons, Dan Weiss and Petey Kerantzes worked the ball well around the horn and setting up play for the just the right scoring opportunity. Matt "the Wall" Cortese made 9 spectacular saves at point blank range to preserve the win before hustling off to pick up a community service award at the Middle School. Way to Go Matt, not only dedicated to his team, but to serving his community too! Coaches Muller, Dooley, McDaid and Guterding were especially proud of the way their boys played together as a team and hustling up the ground balls in prevailing over two tough opponents before going into the Memorial day break. GO GREY!!! GO GC!!!!
